Sew And Tell Friday! A Picture Frame Quilt for Nancy....

Hi, all!

Well, I didn't exactly finish a quilt this week, but I did finish piecing this top - so I'm counting it for Sew and Tell Friday! This is another quilt for my daughter to auction at the silent auction to raise funds for her adoption - the second one of (hopefully) four!

Many thanks to Ashley at Film In The Fridge for the inspiration for this quilt - her mini spring quilt is beautiful and caught my eye and my daughter's!

A funny story - when my husband saw this top, he said, "Wow - - - that's - - a lot of white...." When my daughter saw it, she said, "Wow!!! That's a lot of white!!!" Can you tell which one liked the white?

I'm working on a beautiful pastel disappearing nine-patch quilt right now - hopefully I'll have pictures next week. I don't usually like pastels, but this one is very sweet and feminine. I'll be interested to see how it comes out.

Here's a question for you all - have you ever quilted with shiny thread? Is it difficult? Does it add a neat dimension, or is is not worth the hassle? I'd love to hear your thoughts.....

Later!

Sarah

  4. HA! I also thought, "Wow, that's a lot of white!" But it really brings your eye to both the centers and the borders. I think there's some sort of feng shui going on here. It seems quite peaceful.

I once hand-quilted with gold thread. Really liked the look, but it did have a tendency to unravel. The gold was wrapped around an inner core of white filaments. Not sure if they're all made this way or not.

  5. That's a very eye-catching quilt, Sarah! I really like those blues and greens. I've never quilted with shiny thread myself, but when I was at Nancy's Notions dropping off my Little Dresses this week, I was looking at a quilt on display that has used really pretty shiny thread. Her quilting was meticulous, and the shiny thread really drew your eye to it.

  6. Sarah, the quilt has such a unique look. What a great cause you are making the quilt for!

Yes, I have used metallic thread to do outline quilting before. Make sure you get the needle for Metallic thread to keep the fraying frustration at the minimum. I liked the look, it was for a Christmas quilt, and the flowers sparkle under the light.

  7. I like the double sashings in between the blocks. Love the wonky look! It is a lot of white, but it works.

  8. All that white makes the coloured centres really pop out. Can see why it took your eye. Can't really help you with the shiny thread. I have some variegated slightly shiny thread that I'm about to use. Hopefully I will have no problems with it. Let us know how you get on with yours.

  9. I'm with your daughter on the white - gorgeous!
About the shiny thread - if you mean rayon, rather than metallic, I have used it on small wall quilts and had no trouble. I don't know how sturdy it is to use on a bed quilt, though. But the thread comes in different sizes, so a heavier weight should do the trick, it just needs a bigger needle so it won't fray. Have fun!
