Toddlerless Tuesday #3! Tuesday's Treasures, Too!

Hi, all!

It was certainly a different Toddlerless Tuesday - I didn't get what I thought I'd finish done, but sometimes plans are just made to be changed!

I started out the day thinking I would get a quilt finished, but only got a little of the quilting done on it.  I like what I did, though - it's close-together straight line quilting, and it looks great! Now I just need to get the rest done so I can show you all the quilt.....

A friend was coming over to pick up some fabric for a border and backing, and while we were talking, she told me that she had never done any free motion quilting with a regular sewing machine.   So - - - out came the test sandwich, and I gave her a quick lesson!    It always amazes people when they see how really simple FMQ is - it just takes practice!

Then a friend came over who needed help on a pillow cover for her son, who just left for college - but help turned out to be sewing it up for her, as she doesn't machine piece - she's one of those folks who does beautiful hand piecing, but doesn't feel comfortable using a sewing machine!  Since she wants to get the pillow to her son this weekend, we whipped it up this morning - and I think it came out nice, even though this isn't the best photograph....

Deb's Pillow!
I love the reason she chose this pattern - a Jacob's Ladder variation - because her son's middle name is Jacob!  It's in his new school colors, too!

So all in all, it was a productive Toddlerless Tuesday, even though I didn't do what I set out to do!

And now, for my Tuesday Treasure.....

I want to show you the gift I received last Christmas from my two wonderfully creative (and wonderfully wicked) nieces!  First of all, though, I need to explain to you that for my birthday last year, they sent me a straw handbag covered with silk flowers, with a note saying that they hoped it would inspire me in my purse-making endeavors (this was pre-quilting mania!).   Then, thinking that I would do something equally wicked to them for Christmas, they set out to find the most kitschy present they could find for me, to offset what they were sure I would do to them.  And here's what they found......

And you want to know the funniest thing about this hat?  I absolutely love it!!!  It is positively the silliest thing I've ever seen - all of those "things" you can see reflecting light are little sequin-like things, all different shapes - angel wings, flowers, leaves, you name it, it's probably on there!    I would wear it if I wasn't afraid it would fall apart - the straw hat underneath the fishnet is crumbling away - so it just sits in a place of honor on my china cabinet, inspiring me every day!  (Of course, some days it just inspires me to look for something equally kitschy to send back to them for Christmas this year....... but how can I ever top this???)

So that's my Tuesday Treasure for this week!  I hope you like it as much as I do!!

Make-A-List Monday #10!

Hi, all!

Wow, I can't believe I've been doing this for ten weeks so far!  Thanks for bearing with me!  It has been a help to me, for sure - no more moments during the week when I think, "Hmmm, I have nothing to do!"  So let's see how I did last week...

1.  Process more fabric for inclusion in the stash with my friend (hooray for friends who want to come over and cut!!)  Oh, this is so-o-o-o-o done!  Here's a pic, but if you want to see more of what we did, check out  this post on Stash Manicure!

2.  Choose fabrics and cut pieces for two-three more ministry quilts.  What a week!  This turned into five ministry quilts - two kits have been pulled and delivered to other quilters who are working on them; I made another flimsy and back yesterday, and hope to quilt it this week; a pattern has been drawn up for the fourth quilt; and a pattern has been chosen for the fifth quilt!  Whew!!

3.  Lay out my design for my Bee Splendid quilt top.
Did I really put this one here again???

OK - (drum roll please) and the goals for this week are......

1.  Quilt and bind the completed flimsy for the quilt ministry.

2.  Pull and cut fabrics for the fourth quilt for the ministry; package in small kits to distribute to fellow quilters to work up blocks and return.

3.  Pull fabrics for the fifth ministry quilt.

4.  Choose a pattern for a gift quilt (October birthday!)

5.  Help my friend made a Jacob's Ladder pillow for her son's new college dorm room!

6.  Enter every AccuQuilt GO! Cutter give-away I can find!  (Can you tell I really want one of these?)

I think that's enough for one week.

Later!

PS  There's another AccuQuilt GO! Cutter giveaway at I'm Just a Guy Who Quilts - check it out!

Quilting "Green"!!

Hi, all!

It's not a usual day for a post from me, but I couldn't resist passing on this blog post I just read on Stash Manicure.   You have got to check it out - Rae Ann has some of the best ideas for "renew, reuse, recycle" that I've ever seen!!  And it's all stuff you've probably got already...... the best kind!!

And - my recipient got her package in the mail, so I can finally show off some pics -

This cute little pincushion was made using Spun Sugar Quilts' giant pincushion sew along!  All done by hand, most of it sitting on the boat enjoying the nice weather.....  See the turtles swimming along the side?  My friend loves turtles, and when I saw this fabric, it just screamed her name to me!!  And the little turtle button nestled in the middle was languishing in my button box - he's so happy to be out in the open now!

I highly recommend this project if you need a little hand-work to take with you somewhere - it doesn't take a lot of fabric, skill or time - and it makes a great gift!  Who can't use a really cute pincushion?  Or, if you want to be creative like my granddaughter, it can be a hat, a frisbee, a cushion for sitting on.......  the possibilities are endless!!

PS - keep an eye on the blog archive count - it's getting close to 100, and that means "giveaway time"!!

And yet another PS - my husband tells me that talking about something on my blog is likely to catch the eye of people with power - so here's my birthday wish list -

An AccuQuilt GO! fabric cutter!!  If you haven't seen this all over blogland yet, check it out on the AccuQuilt website - it's amazing!  As much fabric as we process for our ministry quilts, it would be a godsend.....   So anyway, I'm entering giveaways like a crazy woman, trying to win one.  If you know of a giveaway, leave a comment and let me know where it is - I may have missed it!  (Do you think my hubby suggested this so I'd quit hinting to him about it? lol!)

And here's one giveaway going on for the GO! Cutter - check out A Quilting Life!

Happy Friday!!

Hi, all!

I don't have a Friday finish today - the one sewing project I finished is somewhere in the US Mail system, winging its way to its intended recipient, so I can't show it - I don't want to spill the beans too early!  But - I am a guest blogger today on Stash Manicure, so check it out!  Stash Manicure is a great blog, with lots of tips about how to keep your fabric stash under control, and great quilt ideas for using it!  So, see you there!!

And because I can't leave without giving you a quick idea of how I spent my week....

Here's Miss Lilli, who never met a stash
she didn't want to manicure!

Toddlerless Tuesday #2! Tuesday's Treasures, and Giveaways!

Hi, all!

Whew!! I did not waste this Toddlerless Tuesday AT ALL!!!  A friend of mine came over to help, and we sorted through a table full of donated fabric, cutting and folding and sorting by color and boxing by cut.  Here's what we started with:

Scary, isn't it??  To see what we ended up with, tune in to Stash Manicure this Friday - I'll be guest blogging there and I'll have finished pics and some information about what we did in detail.

And Now, Tuesday's Treasures...

I also want to throw my two cents in on Tuesday's Treasures - I've really enjoyed choosing just which "treasure"to show you pictures of.  This week, I've decided to show you one of my favorite sewing machines.  This machine was bought for me by my lovely and wildly intelligent daughter, who spotted it at a yard sale and thought I might enjoy it!  You know how sometimes someone hits the nail right on the head when giving you a gift?  Well this was one of those times!  So let me introduce you to Sweet Charity.....

Isn't she lovely?  I named her Sweet Charity because she's a grand old lady, deserving of a lovely old-fashioned name, and my daughter found her at a yard sale raising money for a friend's Ethiopian adoption.

Look at the detailing on this baby!  There's more on the back, too, similar to this.  And there's a small box built into the side of the case that had six (yes, six!) original attachments for the machine, and a user's manual!  It even came with the wooden hood/cover for the machine - I guess this was one of Singer's first "portable" sewing machines!  I took it in to the shop, where they put a new belt on it, did a tune-up and check up and gave it back to me good as new!

And finally, a couple of giveaways.....

If you've been out there in blogland at all, you've probably seen the AccuQuilt Go! Cutter being demo'd on lots of blogs!  Well, two (that I know of!) are currently doing a giveaway - so go check them out!

Karrie Lyne at Freckled Whimsy has one to give away....

And so does Heather at A La Mode Fabric!!

So even though it makes the odds higher, be sure to go check out these giveaways!!!

Make-A-List Monday #9!

Hi, all!

Ouch - last week was not nearly as productive as I wanted it to be!  I think I overestimated how quickly I could do some quilting - that will teach me!!  Here's the run-down:

1.  Quilt and bind the sudoku quilt for the quilt ministry.  I did get this done - and it turned out just lovely!  For some reason this quilt turned out very light and soft - almost as if it knows it's going to someone in a lot of pain....

2.  Quilt and bind the "Sail On" quilt flimsy.  I did get started on the quilting - it's about halfway done!  Getting the quilt sandwich done on this one was a bear - it's really a lot bigger than the quilts I'm used to making!

3.  Sew together the blocks for my Bee Splendid quilt, now that all the blocks are completed.  I did not get started on this - I think I need to set up a design wall to arrange the blocks.  The dogs keep trying to lay on them when I lay it on the floor!!

4.  Prepare the sashing for my Simple Sampler Quilt Along blocks and put together the two flimsies.  Was this really on my list?  I completely missed this one!

5.  Quilt two flannel baby quilt flimsies for the quilt ministry.  I did get two baby quilts done this week - one was a flimsy my friend Cassie made, and the other flimsy I pieced - both were quilted, bound, and delivered today!

So - - - can I come up with a more realistic list this week?

1.  Process more fabric for inclusion in the stash with my friend (hooray for friends who want to come over and cut!!)

2.  Choose fabrics and cut pieces for two-three more ministry quilts.

3.  Lay out my design for my Bee Splendid quilt top.

Let's stop there and see if I can get this much done this week! Considering I'm also hosting our monthly bunco game, I'd better leave some time for house-cleaning this week.....

Sew&Tell Friday - Peaceful Paisley

Hi, all!!

Friday again!   It's been a different kind of week for me, with extra time for sewing because Lilli is in preschool two days a week.  I managed to get two quilts finished this week - both of them collaborative efforts!

The center top of this quilt was pieced by my friend Cassie, using fabrics mostly donated to us by my bloggy friend Karrie Lyne of Freckled Whimsy!  Thanks, Karrie, they made up into a beautiful quilt!

(By the way, Karrie had her second quilt posted at the Moda Bake Shop today!
It's called Crossing Paths and it is gorgeous!  Go check it out!)

Back to this quilt - I added a paisley border and pieced a back for the quilt, then quilted it with a paisley-ish random meander.   After washing and drying it, you can't imagine how soft and light this quilt is - I think it's quite the nicest one I've seen.  This quilt will be going to comfort someone through our church's quilt ministry - I think she will love it!

And here's the second quilt - a little flannel baby quilt, also pieced by my friend Cassie.  Are you seeing a trend here?  Cassie has time to piece, but not so much time to quilt, so I took this one to finish it off.  It's made by Beth's great easy quilt pattern, which you can see here.  This is such a great pattern, and we've just adapted it to make it smaller for newborns.  Instead of a batt, it has a layer of flannel between the top and back.

On other fronts, it's been a great week for Lilli, who absolutely loves preschool - she jumps right in and barely even tells me goodbye when I drop her off!  But - she's always glad to see me when I come back to pick her up, so all is well!

I also managed (finally!) to score some Far Far Away 2 in the aqua line for a quilt for Lilli, AND I managed to score some of Laurie Wisbrun's Urban Circus in a giveaway sponsored by Red Pepper Quilts and Hawthorne Threads!!  I have wanted some of that Urban Circus since the first time I saw it, but couldn't justify buying any with all the fabric I have in the stash - but winning it?  That's ok!  Woohoo!

And I just found out that if you join the American Quilt Society for $25 per year, you not only get six issues of American Quilter magazine, but you can get a discount card for Joann's that takes 10% off your purchase total, both sale and regular price items, every time you shop there!  Now, even if you don't buy Joann's fabric, it's still a great place to buy batts, templates, rotary cutter blades, etc.  I figure I spend at least $250 annually on just that stuff, so that membership will pay for itself every year!

Here's a great giveaway to check out - Megan over at Lucy & Norman is celebrating her first blog-aversary with a fabulous collection of fabrics to give away, picked from her fabulous stash!

And in case you haven't noticed, I'm getting mighty close to that all-important 100th blog post - keep an eye out for a giveaway!  I've got something really nice stashed away just waiting for a new home.....

I hope you have had as good a week as I did.  I'm linking up to Amy's Sew&Tell Friday, and Andrea's Lush Friday - be sure to check them out and see what everyone's been making this week!

Later!

Sarah

PS - I just found out about this great new quilt-along - designed to help you learn how to free motion quilt!  Check it out and see if it's something you'd like to do - I'm going to give it a whirl!!

Toddlerless Tuesday #1

Hi, all!

As I said in my earlier post today, Lilli started preschool today (just 2 days a week) and I felt an oncoming case of "empty nest syndrome"!  So, to stave it off, I decided to start posting a Toddlerless Tuesday post to let you know what I did with my extra five hours - because that will make me put down whatever good book I'm reading and do something constructive!

When I walked outside early this morning to go pick up Lilli, it was amazingly cool - and you've got to understand, that's something we've been missing here in middle Tennessee for at least 30 days, and maybe longer!  So when I got back from taking Lilli to preschool, I grabbed the flimsies and backs that I had ready and took them out to the clothesline for a shot of spray basting.  I put together the quilt sandwiches for a flannel baby quilt and the sudoku quilt that a friend of mine pieced for the quilt ministry.

I managed to get the baby quilt quilted, using a large random stippling!  The binding is on, and I'll be sitting here after I finish this post, doing the hand sewing to finish the binding.  By the way, this is made using Beth's great pattern that she posted on Love Laugh Quilt - it's super easy and really useful for using up flannel stash!!

I had hoped to start quilting on the sudoku quilt, but ran into a brain glitch trying to figure out what color thread to use, and what pattern to quilt it with.  I've got that figured out now, so I think I can get it done between tomorrow's naptime and Thursday's preschool time!

So - - - - I'm happy with what I got accomplished today - I'd say it was a successful Toddlerless Tuesday!  Thanks for keeping me accountable.......

How to Ward Off Empty-Nest Syndrome....

Hi, all!

Miss Lilli has started pre-school this morning - so two days a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have about five hours to do whatever I want!  And just so I don't fritter this time away, I'm going to start posting on Tuesday nights under the title "Toddler-less Tuesdays"!  I hope this will keep me accountable for the extra time, so it's productive!

But in the meantime, I want to join in the Tuesday Treasures parade - I finally got some pictures taken of some of my treasures and want to share two in particular today.

This picture was drawn by my great-grandmother, who was a fine artist, working mostly in charcoals and pastels.  Unfortunately, she was also a farm wife and mother, so she probably didn't get the recognition she deserved.  But her pieces are highly prized among our family members, and I think each of us has at least one.  I think I have another one upstairs, but as my grandmother is no longer around to tell me for sure, I'll just have to hope it's one of hers!  She was my great-grandfather's third wife, and mother to his 14th, 15th and 16th children, along with a couple of still-born children.  My grandmother was the 15th child, and she was born when my great-grandfather was 73 years old!  I don't know a whole lot about him - obviously he died a long time before I was born - but I do have this wonderful picture that I found in the attic after my grandmother died.....

Written on the back, in my grandmother's handwriting, it says "Daddy and his BIG hog!"  In a time when photographs were hard to take (how in the world did they get the hog to stand still that long?) and expensive, this photograph was also colorized and framed in a $6.95 cent frame (I know this because the price is stamped into the back of the frame!)  So now it hangs in a place of honor in the "Rogue's Gallery" collection of photos at my home.

I hope you like my Tuesday Treasures as much as I do!

Make-A-List Monday #8!

Hi, all!

Monday has come again, just like it always does - despite the fact that I wish I had a couple of days more to work on my list!  I've not done so well this week in crossing things off the list, but I have managed a few things - so let's see how it went.....

1.  Sew up the last blocks in the Simple Sampler Quilt Along!   Done!  See how they turned out....

2.  Quilt and bind a Sudoku pattern flimsy (made by a friend) for the quilt ministry.  Not done - but I did get the flimsy finished, the back pieced and a batt prepared.  It's just been too hot to get outside to spray baste!

3.  Quilt and bind my Sail On quilt flimsy.  Not done - but the back is pieced.

4.  Make four more Jacob's Ladder blocks, then lay out and assemble my Bee Splendid quilt top!  I can't wait!!   I got these done today.  I can't wait to lay it out and see how it looks!!

5.  Sort through some more of the donated fabric and store by size/color.  This is where I spent my time last week!  My hubby was out of town, so I didn't have to clean up every afternoon - and I was in the mood to organize (those days are few and far between!)  Here's the upstairs shelves, where all the pieces of more than a yard are stored...

There's still lots of "smaller-than-a-yard" pieces to sort out and cut down to smaller sizes, but it's coming along- I managed to get one big box out of my dining room yesterday!

So here's what I'll be working on this week....

1.  Quilt and bind the sudoku quilt for the quilt ministry.

2.  Quilt and bind the "Sail On" quilt flimsy.

3.  Sew together the blocks for my Bee Splendid quilt, now that all the blocks are completed.

4.  Prepare the sashing for my Simple Sampler Quilt Along blocks and put together the two flimsies.

5.  Quilt two flannel baby quilt flimsies for the quilt ministry.

Hopefully I'll do better this week than last week!!  I should be able to - Lilli starts preschool this week, on Tuesday and Thursday, so I'll have a lot more "unassisted" time to work on quilts.  It's gonna feel really weird!

So what are you working on this week?

Oh look, a bunny!

Hi, all!

My wonderful friend P. from The Way I Sew It has awarded me with my very first blogging award, the Versatile Blogger award!  Thank you so much, P.!  I'm not worthy!!!  {happy dance happy dance}

I love that she thought of me!  After I read her wonderfully creative post, I started thinking about what to say in mine - and wondered about the various definitions of the word "versatile".  My friend Google listed many definitions - a person having many skills, being able to move in more than one direction, having varied uses or serving many functions - but I think my favorite and most apt (at least for me!) is "turning with ease from one thing to another; readily applied to a new task..."  As many of you know, I am seriously finish-challenged, something which I've been trying hard to work on this year!  But it seems only appropriate that I now have an award for being able to drop one project and pick up another!

The award did come with some rules, which are meant to be broken:

  • Thank and link back to the person who gave you the award. (Check!)
  • Share 7 things about yourself.
  • Pass the award to 15 blogs you enjoy and let them know they've been given the award.

Okay, here goes.

Seven things about myself:

1.  I grew up in Miami, Florida, quite possibly the most "Yankee" place south of the Mason-Dixon line.  I've lived in the deep south since 1980, but I still have a hard time understanding "southern" sometimes!  However, I have picked up a respectable southern drawl......

2.  I love to play with power tools.  My favorite Mother's Day gift from my husband was my very own compressor and two nail guns!  My granddaughter takes after me in this - so I have to keep them away from her or she'd take off and use them herself!

3.  When I was ten, my dad let me fly with a friend of his in a teeny-tiny acrobatic airplane - we did loops, barrel rolls, and hammerhead stalls. If my mother had seen it, she'd have croaked!!  It sure was fun, though!

4.  I used to work in retail, and have had both "Radar" O'Reilly from M*A*S*H (Gary Burghoff) and George Carlin come into my store!

5.  I had a whole roast pig, complete with apple in it's mouth, at my wedding reception - and didn't get a bite!  The first place we went after leaving the reception was Burger King for some food!!

6.  Our family will soon go international when my daughter and son-in-law adopt a child (or children!) from Ethiopia!

7.  In my craft room I have a potter's wheel that I enjoy using and hope to get back to soon - I had to stop because Lilli was too little to understand why she couldn't "help" and it's a really messy process - but now I think she's old enough to enjoy playing with clay on her own while I throw some pots!

And Now (Drum Roll Please......)  Fifteen Award-Deserving Versatile Bloggers:
1. Beth @
Love Laugh Quilt
2. Vickie E. @
Spun Sugar Quilts
3. Jodi @

4. Karrie Lyne @

13. Heather @

14. Amy @

15. Amy @

And I think my friend P. had a great philosophy about this -  please don't feel obligated to be a rule-follower if this seems like too much work. After all, it's that time of year where we should be kicking back and enjoying life to its fullest.   But I want each of you, and actually all of my bloggy friends, to know just how much you are appreciated!!  Thanks to all of you!!

Sew&Tell Friday - Not Nearly a Finish, but a Good Start!

Hi, all!!

Well, I gave up a couple of potential finishes this week to take advantage of being in the mood to deal with the over-running fabric stash!  My husband was out of town, which meant that I didn't need to clean up every afternoon before he came home, so Wednesday I started cutting down some of the fabrics into usable chunks.  Of course, this was interspersed with "picnics" and "sand-castle building" and "nap-time" with the Lillibug on the living room rug - it's hard to resist spending time with her, especially when she's being so imaginative!

And then this morning, I looked on Stash Manicure's new post that showed how Jacquie of Tallgrass Prairie Studio deals with her stash.  Lightbulbs went off over my head!  Eureka!! This is what I need to do!!  So - I dragged the ironing board next to the fabric stash (at least, the downstairs one...) and this is the result....

While it may not look like much, this is a huge improvement over the piles that existed previously - there are 2 1/2" and 5" squares boxed, 1/2 yard pieces folded and boxed, <1 yard pieces folded, 2 boxes (so far) of fat quarters, solids folded, and lots of >1 yard pieces folded.  I love this method of folding - I can put two stacks in each section of my shelving unit, and see so much more of each fabric than if it was folded so that only one piece fit across.  Of course, as I said in the title of this post, this is only a good start - because even downstairs, I've still got this:

and this

and this!

(and that's not even thinking about the stash upstairs!)

I did finish my blocks for the Simple Sampler Quilt Along - these are the last of sixteen blocks for two different quilts - next week we learn how to sash and complete the top!  Woohoo!!

And I finished one of the Spun Sugar Quilts Super-Size Pin Cushions - I like it a lot, it was pretty easy and I can work on it while I'm watching tv!  Plus my granddaughter used it for a hat, a purse, and a tuffet!  (I think it got a little bit flatter when she sat on it.....)

Notice the button in the middle?  My sister sent me some vintage buttons for my birthday, and when I opened them up, I realized that this one would be perfect for my pincushion!  How's that for timing!!

And last, but certainly not least, when I was in Joann's this morning picking up some lavender cotton for a quilt hanging sleeve, I scored some of Alexander Henry's 2D Zoo!!  Woohoo!!!

I think I'll make Lilli a pinafore out of this, since I don't have any little boys (yet!).  I love the colors in this, and it will look so good with her blue eyes!!

As usual, I'm going to link up to Amy's Sew&Tell Friday, and Andrea's Lush Friday.  Be sure to check out what everyone's finished this week - there's lots of wonderful eye candy out there!!!!

Make-A-List Monday #7!

Hi, all!!

Well, Monday has rolled around again - we had a busy weekend but I managed to get a good bit done anyway!  Let's see how I did on last week's list.....

1.  Quilt and bind the scrappy Random Reflections quilt for the quilt ministry.  Finished! I'm very pleased with the way this came out....

2.  Do two weeks of blocks for the Simple Sampler Quilt Along.  I finally finished these this morning - whew!!

3.  Piece Mary's Drunk Love blocks for Bee Splendid.  Done!  I really enjoyed making these - my first experience with Drunk Love!

4.  Wave my magic wand over the boxes of fabric donations I received last week in the hope that they will shelve themselves!  (Or get to work on shelving/sorting those lovely fabrics!)   I spent some time on Tuesday sorting through some of the fabric with a young visitor - we sorted out fat quarters, yardage, and scraps to be cut into squares and strips.  We didn't get through all of it, but at least we made a start!  Thanks, Meredith!

5.  Piece a back for my Sail On quilt.  This is what I'm working on right now - I've drawn up my plan for the back, located all the fabrics, and cut a few of them.  I just need to finish cutting and put it together; should be done tomorrow morning!

So what will I be working on this week?

1.  Sew up the last blocks in the Simple Sampler Quilt Along!

2.  Quilt and bind a Sudoku pattern flimsy (made by a friend) for the quilt ministry.

3.  Quilt and bind my Sail On quilt flimsy.

4.  Make four more Jacob's Ladder blocks, then lay out and assemble my Bee Splendid quilt top!  I can't wait!!

5.  Sort through some more of the donated fabric and store by size/color.

I think that's enough for the week - hopefully I can get through all of this!

What are you working on this week???

Later!
