What's On The Bookshelf Wednesday - The Quiltmaker's Gift

Hi, all!

Welcome to What's On The Bookshelf Wednesday!  I hope you're enjoying these posts as much as I am - I've rediscovered a lot of really cool books on my shelf that I had forgotten about!

The book I want to share with you today is something a little bit outside the norm for a crafty blog, but I think it's such a special book and speaks volumes about the reasons so many of us make our quilts only to give them away.

The Quiltmaker's Gift tells the story of a generous quilt maker who makes the most beautiful quilts in the world, only to give them away.

There's also a greedy king, who keeps collecting things trying to find something to make him happy...

This is a gloriously illustrated book, with treasures hidden on every page - you could look at it over and over and see something new every time!

The greedy king decides that he must have a quilt from the quilt maker to be happy - but the quilt maker has another idea.

The story is enchanting, a fable for our times.  This is a wonderful book to give to a quilter, too.  Quilts are featured throughout the book, beautiful traditional designs in rich saturated colors.  Children will love the story, and it's a great way to introduce them to the concept of giving to others who have less than they do.

I do hope you will check out The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken.  A portion of the revenue from The Quiltmaker's Gift is given to the following projects that support the spirit of generosity portrayed in this book:  ABC Quilts, SOS Children's Villages - USA, The Heifer Project International, Doctors Without Borders, and New York Cares.

So that's what's on my bookshelf this week.  Have you looked at yours lately?

Hugs!

Sarah

  2. My daughter loved this book when she was younger. I bought the companion book - Quilts from the Quiltmakers Gift, so I could make one of the quilts for her

  4. There was a fabric line, too. I still have a small piece of the Friendship Star print that was apparently inspired by that last photo.

  5. I forgot that I had that book! I got it when Gail deMarcken was a guest of my guild. She's a very personable lady who did the beautiful illustrations for the book. Thanks for reminding me of these books--I'll get them out today and keep them on display.

  7. There are two companion books, Quilts from the Quilt Maker's Gift and More Quilts from the Quilt Mker's Gift, but unfotunately they are both out of print. I checked Amazon and there are used copies of both titles available. I'd also recommend you check with your local public library or library system (a great resource that people forget about).
The quilts in both companion books are as beautiful as the picture book.

  8. This is a beautiful book. We have seen it produced on stage, too. When the lights came up on the stage, I cried. Beautiful quilts created the entire backdrop and populated the set. It was breathtaking.

  11. I love this book - I have had it on my shelf for many many years, even before I started quilting. All my grand children recognized it from school.

  12. I first encountered this book when I was a volunteer at our school library. I now have the two companion quilt making books and have made several quilts from the patterns in them.
