I May Have A Scrap Problem - Ready for April!

Hi, all!

Well, the first month of the I May Have A Scrap Problem challenge is in the books.  Did you join in?  I've heard from lots of folks who have re-discovered what a wonderful treasure trove lies in their scrap bins - it's a good feeling!  Last week thirty-seven folks linked up to share their progress - how awesome is that!  I found lots of inspiration in reading their posts, along with some really great ideas for the future.

In last week's post, I offered to mail scraps to the first five people with scrap envy who requested them.  I was amazed at how many people indicated they wanted some scraps!  It appears that while lots of folks don't have a scrap problem, they want to have one...

Here's a picture of the scraps I mailed out earlier this week - five packages to the first five from last week, plus two more boxes to folks who were willing to pay postage.  I'm guessing that's about 25-30 pounds of scraps out of my stash - how's that for scrap management?!?!?!?

And I promised to send out a couple of these Olfa Splash rotary cutters (simply the best!) to two people chosen from the people who linked up last week.  And the winners are....

PK Solberg, who made a beautiful rope bowl with her scraps...

...and Karen, who got all of her UFOs organized into separate tubs so that she could get a better handle on what she had to work on!  Good work, ladies!  Please email me at salliesue57 (at) gmail (dot) com with your snail mail addresses and I'll get these in the mail to you!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

And now it's time to set some goals for April.  I looked at all the scraps under my long arm frame and decided that the blue box needed working on next.  Here's a photo of the tub, and yes, that's 10 pounds, 9.2 ounces of fabric.  By my reckoning, that's slightly over 29 yards of fabric...  yowza!!!

I'm hoping to press, fold and organize these fabrics, pulling out the string fabrics for string blocks, and then cutting pieces for another quit top.  Lately I've been seeing a lot of pictures like this...

...so I think I may cut out a bunch of orange peels and stitch them onto blocks of a great group of low-volume background fabrics from my stash.  At least that's the plan - it may change as I see what is actually in that tub!

And here's a couple of great scrappy ideas I found this week - first of all, this small rotating cutting mat with tiny rotary cutter and two rulers - a great find at Joann's that will allow me to trim things up while sitting in the den with my hubby!

And I also found this great publication on Craftsy - it's free and has lots of great ideas for cutting, storing and using your scraps!

So now it's your turn to tell us what you hope to accomplish with your scraps in April!  Do you want to organize?  Create something unique?  Link up below and share your goals!

Hugs!

Sarah

  1. I really like the look of orange peel quilts, that's a good one for the using scraps patterns. I was so sure I was going to make a dent this time, but three custom quilts have me turning my back on the scraps once again.

  2. Congrats to all who got the scrap packages. I also really like the orange peel quilt idea. I have that on my bucket list. A friend gave me her scraps and there were lots of the peels already made up. You have inspired me to pull them out again and start on that quilt. Thanks!!

  4. OOOH OOOH Orange Peel Love!!! Makes me want to sew orange peels. : ) Will be waiting on pins and needles to see the next post from your scrap bag. Looks like big chunks of fabric in that tub. What do you define as a scrap? Smaller than a half a yard? Simply leftovers from other projects? Janita

  5. Good luck with your blues and green scraps. I have been so tempted to start an orange peel project, but I really don't need another WiP or UFO! Can't wait to see your progress.

  6. Orange peels looks like such a fun quilt, someday I hope to make one out of some of my scraps. I think of scraps the way I think of leftovers in the frig - a free meal, or a free quilt!

  7. I sure have appreciated you starting this - It is making me look at my scraps more often - rather than stuffing them back in something!

  10. I've seen those orange peels around, too. So far, I'm resisting! =) Mailing away your scrap problem is one solution! LOL I really cracked up when I read this in your post: "It appears that while lots of folks don't have a scrap problem, they want to have one...."

  12. For April I'm really hoping to use my scraps to create more baby quilts. I have about 4 baby quilts that I know will be coming up.

I should probably try to sort my scraps, but that sounds too big of a project right now.

  13. Mailing off your scraps...that never occurred to me. I did think of making a braided rug, until I started cutting. Oh no! that's a lot of work! So I decided to cut and sew them. There has to be a problem with my brain, like I'm missing the part that allows for reasoning! But it sure is fun!

  15. I like your orange peels. I may have to give them a try one of these days. Thanks for hosting the link-up. It's pushing me to organize and use some of my scraps -- and to at least think about organizing the rest of them.
