Hey, y’all!
Tennessee was granted statehood in 1796. Interestingly, it was the last state to secede during the Civil War, and the first to be re-admitted to the Union. It stretches from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Mississippi River in the west. Geographically it is broken into three “grand divisions", each with its own beauty and sights to see.
The Great Smoky Mountains |
Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are famous for their beautiful fall scenery and shopping, and you wouldn’t want to miss the Dollywood theme park while you are there. Knoxville hosted the 1982 World’s Fair, and you can still see the Sunsphere, built especially for the World’s Fair as you drive through.
The Sunsphere in Knoxville, TN |
In 1974 Walter Cronkite designated Knoxville as the “Streaking Capital of the World.” It was in the spring of that year that an estimated 5,000 people on the University of Tennessee’s famous Cumberland Avenue took their clothes off…stripping on the “strip.” The atomic bomb, modern history’s most closely guarded secret, was developed in nearby Oak Ridge.
The stage at the Grand Ole Opry |
Nashville's Grand Ole Opry is the longest continuously running live radio program in the world. It has broadcast every Friday and Saturday night since 1925. The phrase “good to the last drop” was coined by Theodore Roosevelt at the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville after he finished a cup of the locally produced coffee they served.
Just down I-24 in Coffee County, Bonnaroo is held each year - a massive music festival attended by tens of thousands each year and boasting a wide variety of styles of music.
The crowd at Bonnaroo 2013 |
Chattanooga, down on the Georgia border, is famous for the world’s steepest passenger railway line and the largest fresh water aquarium in the world.
The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanoga |
The Glen Miller Orchestra won the first gold record awarded by the music industry for its recording of The Chattanooga Choo-Choo. Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1899 at a plant on Patten Parkway in downtown Chattanooga after two local attorneys purchased the bottling rights to the drink for $l.00.
The famous ducks of the Peabody Hotel |
Cotton made Memphis a major port on the Mississippi River. The Memphis Cotton Exchange still handles approximately one-third of the entire American cotton crop each year. Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, is also located there, and sees 600,000 visitors each year.
Graceland by Thomas Kincade |
It is the second most visited private home in America, second only to Biltmore House in Ashville, NC. The legendary railroad engineer Casey Jones, who was killed when his train crashed on April 30, 1900, lived in Jackson, TN and Jackson is also the home of Pringles Potato Crisps!
The license plate block I designed represents the different divisions of the state. At the bottom of the block, you can see the brown representing the Mississippi River, also known as The Big Muddy, which borders the western section of the state. Next you see the green rolling hills of the central portion of the state, and finally the gray and blue bands which reflect the beautiful mountains of the Great Smokies. All of this under a beautiful Tennessee blue sky! The red, white and blue circle comes from the center of the Tennessee flag. The three stars in its center represent the three grand divisions of the state.
Outer Ring - 4 Light Red
Inner Ring & Stars - 1 White
Center - 93 Light Navy
Starting from the bottom, take the bottom two applique pieces (the brown Mississippi piece and the light lime piece) and overlay the brown on the light lime. Using your preferred technique, applique the two pieces together along the top of the brown piece. I used a machine blanket stitch with clear thread. You could just as easily use needle turn applique or raw edge stitching.
After stitching it down, turn the piece over and cut away the light lime that overlays the brown, so that you have a piece with only one layer.
This will help reduce the thickness of your finished piece. Repeat the process until the entire landscape applique is finished.
To make the Tennessee state symbol, trace the symbol in the PDF to cut circles for the outer, middle, and inner circles, and the three stars. As before, I used Heat-N-Bond to make my symbol, so I traced the designs onto Heat-N-Bond before ironing it to the fabrics. Assemble the symbol.
After the lettering is completed, attach the landscape applique and state symbol. You’re done!
If you'd like a copy of the PDF file that contains the landscape diagram, the lettering and the state symbol, please request it in a comment below, leave your email address, and I'll send it to you!

ReplyDeleteGood morning. I have a personal goal to visit all 50 states. I currently have 38 crossed of the list. I have been to Tennessee several times.
ReplyDeleteI follow you via bloglovin. I so enjoy the pictures of all the quilts.
ReplyDeleteI have visited all but 3 states and hope to visit them this year. My favorite state is Alaska, I love it here
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is brick
ReplyDeleteI follow via email
ReplyDeleteI have lived in 5 states and visited many on the way from the midwest (where I grew up) on family trips to California, and from the midwest to Washington DC. I have lived in Brooklyn, NY for the past 34 years, and I guess it is my favorite because I have no desire to move. I have visited several states along the eastern seaboard since I have moved here, as well, but never got around to counting. I have been to florida to visit my parents since they retired there, but I prefer the northern states and winter over hot and humid.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is dark turquoise, but it was hard to choose only one.
ReplyDeleteI follow you on bloglovin, and look forward to your posts. Thanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have lived in 7 different states (an Army brat). North Carolina is my favorite - have lived here over 40 years now. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLight lime is my favorite color of the AMB fabrics. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Iowa, Texas and Missouri. Texas is my fav.
ReplyDeleteI'm counting 14 states that I've visited, but I might be missing a couple. As for states I've lived in that would be Illinois and Iowa (currently Iowa.)
ReplyDeleteI have lived in 3 states and visited probably somewhere between 30 and 40 of them. I have especially enjoyed visiting Hawaii and Utah, and have liked all the states I've lived in. There seem to be good things about every state, can't really pick a favorite.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower too. I remember buying a bunch of GooGoo Clusters at the airport coming back from visiting my sister who lives in TN. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteI lived in 1 state, and visited about 6 I think... I think every state has something great and something not-so-great so I will not pick a favorite :) thanks for the chance to win
ReplyDeleteI've not traveled much but have been just inside TN. Let me count.... only 8 states.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to have to get my hands on a bundle of this fabric to start playing. Every time I thought I found a favorite color I'd see another one that I like better. I'm thinking the light and dark turquoises might be the colors I was searching for to finish my FW quilt so I'll go with those for today.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am a follower! thanks again
ReplyDeleteThe AMB colors are lovely. Light Aqua is the color I seem to be drawn to lately.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower too. I really want to try those Moon Pies. (I'm sure if I looked I could find them around here, but I've never had one before.)
ReplyDeleteAlso picking a color is hard :) I like them all... but probably my favorite is Aqua!
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteOh what a great license plate! this quilt is going to be so neat. I've lived in 6 states, we traveled A LOT when I was growing up, living in various places in a few of those states. I'm happy to have set roots down in upper California 26yrs ago. thanks for a great blog hop.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in four and my favorite so far is Florida
ReplyDeleteI already follow you
ReplyDeleteAll the colors are wonderful but I have to pick agua
ReplyDeleteWow. I had no idea there were so many pieces to the landscape of TN. I love the layers on your plate, especially the mountains. I am going to try out making this block. I haven't been to very many states. Figured once I had been to 12 states.
ReplyDeleteI have traveled to all the states east of the Mississippi and some west of the Miss. I always say my favorite is the one I'm in at that time! Each is special in it's own way.
ReplyDeletePlease send me the pdf for the license plate. You did a fabulous job.
marsha.hodgkins@yahoo.com
I've visited or lived in 15 states. I don't know that I have a favorite--I love how unique each state is and just how much you can see and do that is sooo different! I'm loving this blog hop for that.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite co,or is 113, Forest.
ReplyDeleteI guess I've been to or lived in 38 of the 50 states. Most of the ones I've not seen yet are in the deep south. Guess we'll have to make that circuit after DH retires!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for our LQS order of AMB to come in so I can see all the colors in person, but right now I'm testing a piece of light yellow for hand quilting a wholecloth quilt, and love the way it needles. The light yellow is a gorgeous soft shade, love it.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in New York all of my life, moving from the suburbs of NYC to the ocean, to the mountains. I have visited or passed through about 15- so much to see and learn!
ReplyDeleteI am following via e-mail. Lyn Kaufmann
ReplyDeleteI like them all! If I really have to pick I was able to narrow it down to the raspberry and periwinkle.

ReplyDeleteI have visited about 20 states. But my favorite has to be PA as that is my home and has been all my life. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am following your blog. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from your write-up. It was very interesting. I lived in New Hampshire as a very young child and have probably visited about. 20 states over the years.
ReplyDeleteAs for favourite colour raspberry would tickle my fancy.
I have visited 49 of the 50 states - have not gotten to Hawaii yet. I have lived in 8 states - one of these are counted twice as I lived in Idaho twice but now and the last 34 years have lived in Arkansas
ReplyDeleteI love the aqua's and the tomato red the best
ReplyDeleteI have lived in 3 states, so far and my favorite is Washington. We lived near the Puget Sound, the view was awesome and I love the weather out there. The rain is often a soft sprinkle, so you don't really get very wet. I often went without an umbrella. The west coast doesn't have much humidity, either, which I miss.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is the Dark Aqua.
ReplyDeleteI have been in 25 of the 50 states. Great job on your plate. The fabrics are beautiful. Can't wait to see them in the shops.
ReplyDeletejanita
I follow you by email. Thank you. Janita
ReplyDeleteTN is in my family's blood - really! We recently became one of the "First Families of TN" based on several people in our family tree who first settled there. We've always loved our vacations in E. TN - the Tweetsie Railroad, Clingman's Dome, etc - even since I was a little girl. As a military family of my own, we were mostly overseas, but did drive from Washington to Washington twice. Homes have been in WA, FL, TX, CA, MD.
ReplyDeleteHello from Minnesota! I've lived in MT, MN, and NY (If you count military training sites, I'd add SC, VA, WI, AZ, IN, LA) and as for visiting, then there's OR, WA, CA, NV, UT, CO, WY, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, IA, MO, IL, FL, MD, NJ, and ME. That's only 29... But it's fun to count!
ReplyDeleteI love the light red. Think I'll have to order a swatch card.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in two states. Visited six. Love your plate!
ReplyDeleteI've lived only in MO but have visited many.
ReplyDeleteDark raspberry is a real pretty color!
ReplyDeleteRoyal Blue.
ReplyDeleteOne of my bucket list items is to set foot in all 48 contiguous states. I've visited half of them -- 24 total -- so far! My favorite is Maine simply because I am biased. I went there quite a few times on account of my Grandmother and other relatives lived there.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite colors are purple and green; but, none of those colors in the AMB fabrics strike my fancy. Next favorite is orange and I'm really loving the Dark Orange (37)! The Gold (68) also is lovely and different and is something I most likely use often!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower! :-)
ReplyDeleteFavorite color: 85 Periwinkle. Reminds me of the Forget Me Knots on my vintage Franciscan ware dishes. And, I forgot to mention living in HI - first as UH student, then later as military family.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure how many states I have been in but probably 2/3 of them.
ReplyDeleteI liked Raspberry the most. Give me a hot pink and I am a happy camper.

ReplyDeleteWOW Thank you for sharing the history of Tenn. with all of us. There really is a lot to see and do in your state. I am from Sonora, CA. We live in the foothills, where we are expanding to a bigger city including stop lights and by-passes now. We live 2 1/2 hours from the City of San Francisco where you can travel over the Bay Bridge or Golden Gate Bridge and then over to the Fisherman's Wharf. Thank you for being a part of the AMB Blog Tour and the chance to become a winner of those awesome solids. A quilter cannot have enough solids in her stash. I would love to have the PDF file for your block, which you took the time to design for us.

There are so many different colors to choose from. I like all of them but you would like us to pick one. I really love the color blue, so the Royal Blue is my choice. Still, all of them would make a beautiful quilt for me, of course.

I have only lived in two states but have visited 20 states. My favorite was North Carolina. Living in the flatlands of Florida, I always enjoy the fresh breezes of the NC mountains.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite color from the collection is Aqua.
ReplyDeleteI am a long time follower of your blog :-)
ReplyDeleteI have been to Maine 3 times and I have been to Hawaii. I live in CA and I plan of living here for the rest of my life. I just love the foothills and the weather is just perfect. Besides, the people from the Bay Area want to move to the foothills and I am not going to give them a chance to move where I live. I love it too much myself to move. I also am a follower thru emails.

My favorite state is Washington, I've lived here many years and even though it has rain during winter, it is very comfortable in the Summer and Spring. Just beautiful. :)
favorite color would have to be dark indigo, though I like them all. ;)
