Well, a new year means a fresh start - and new goals! I had so much fun last year with this series, and I did accomplish a lot as a result of it. But I've still got a ridiculous amount of scraps, so I need to make some goals for the year to help get rid of some of them, too. Here's what I'm hoping to do this year, scrap-wise...
Scrappy Quilts for the Stunning Stars Quilt-Along
I'm planning six different quilts for the Stunning Stars Quilt-Along (January 29-March 5) and I want to make at least four of them using scraps from my stash. I think this is feasible, and a great example to set for charity quilting!
Using my Latitude Scraps
Remember this lovely pile of scraps that Kate Spain sent me from her Latitude line of batiks? Well, I really want to use it to make this great quilt designed by Rachel Hauser - isn't it gorgeous?
Do Someone A Solid!
I have a growing stash of solid Kona scraps that I want to turn into a quilt - I'm still searching for a pattern, but there's a great quilt in that tub just waiting to see the light of day!
Continue the Great Scrap Bin Organization
Those scraps under my long arm frame are still there - and secretly, in the dark, I think they are multiplying! So the end goal is still to sort through all those tubs and turn them into usable pieces of fabric. I'd like to get to at least a tub every two months, pressing, folding and cutting - that would make a great dent in the stash!
That's not nearly a comprehensive list, but it is a good start for the year. Are you planning any great scrappy incursions this year? Tell me about it in the comments below - that way we can cheer each other on!

Scraps are just the best!! I have 2 quilts planned: My last string quilt used most of my strings (except blue - my project didn't need blue). My next string quilt will be blue strings in HST's in a friendship star type design. I also have a bunch of leftover 2 inch squares that I'm sewing into 36 square patches that I'll combine with an hourglass block. After that, I've been casing the internet and the library for quilts that use Jelly Rolls. I've been collecting 2 1/2 inch strips and squares. I haven't chosen a design(s) yet but I have several fun candidates!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the stars to use my scraps with. I just want to 'tame', not get rid of - and boy do mine need taming!!
ReplyDeleteI'm ready for the Star quilt and plan to join in the fun. Fail Fence and coin quilts are another scrap buster. I have been looking at Basket Weave String Block at the Love Laugh Quilt blog to tame my strings.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness. I have so many goals, incl. ones that never were completed, lol. I am still working on that Nifty Nines quilt top, for one. Your goals are great, and it's for sure that you will meet all of them- it's just how you are :)

Last year I didn't get too far with my scraps. I think my goal was just too lofty! So, I learned from my error. This year I think I am going to conquer a color or two at a time. Right now the blue bin is totally out of control with scraps piled HIGH above the rim of the storage bin. A blue quilt is first on my list, and will be my project until it's complete.
ReplyDeleteLast year I started with my black and white boxes and I have almost enough log cabin blocks for a quilt top, just 4 more to go!
And Sarah I am so looking forward to your stars! Stars are my very favorite!!
ReplyDeleteMy plan is to continue what I started doing last year -- using the scraps from quilt 1 as the beginning point for quilt 2 rather than putting them in a pile somewhere.
ReplyDeleteTackle those scraps! May I recommend Charm Dash by Ms Midge for your solids? I made a version and it was awesome. Great use of my solids. I'm sure you will pick something great.
ReplyDeleteI think my scraps are having babies, they are multiplying like crazy!! I am working on 2 vortex quilts (crazymomquilts), one with my blacks/greys with a few colors thrown in and one with my scraps. I also have ongoing a postage stamp quilt with my 2" squares and a string quilt. And that's besides all my too many other projects! Love seeing your ideas!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'll be starting a new mystery quilt along later in the month that will be scrap based, as I usually do. I think it is fun to do mysteries with scraps as it doesn't matter what colors go where, and it can all be done from stash.
ReplyDeleteNeed to tame the scraps. A lot are cut into set sizes and are in bins by size. A couple of bags still need cutting. Have to start planning quilts with them. All that great fabric waiting to be mined.
ReplyDeleteI will continue to do string blocks and then I may do some log cabin blocks. Hopefully this will tame some of them down if they don't continue to multiply lol.

ReplyDeleteNow I have all my fabric in one place I have more scraps than I thought but less fabric, it just seemed like a lot when it was scattered around. Maybe it's time I started a leaders and enders project.
ReplyDeleteWhat works for me is to have a pile of fabric that needs to be pressed sitting on my ironing board and when I press something I have just sewn I first iron a piece of fabric. That way I have a nice stack to cut into usable pieces.

DeleteI'm really looking forward to the Stunning Stars posts and hope to learn some new blocks! I have a plan to pull all my full WOF strips out of my scrap piles and do make jelly roll quilts with them.
ReplyDeleteI tend to design quilts around which scrap bin is full. Right now I need to do a black and gray as well as a low volume. Those bins can barely keep their lids on.

ReplyDeleteI made 4 or 5 scrap quilts last year and my scraps still seem to be reproducing? I'll keep trying to harness them- made some really nice quilts though!
