Hi, all!
Yesterday when I mentioned that our church group was making pillowcases for Harvey victims, it apparently touched a chord as people started asking me if they could send some to be sent with ours. If this is something you are interested in doing, read on!
This afternoon I made a few contacts and got the go-ahead to use our church as a collection point. We are already planning to send mission teams to Texas to help with the clean-up efforts - this is something we did for years in New Orleans - and I've been assured that they can help us get the pillowcases into the hands of those in need. We will also probably be sending quilts for the teams to distribute also, so if you have finished quilts you would like to donate, you can send those too. (At this point, we cannot take unfinished quilts.)
Images such as these have torn at our hearts this week, but I've also been inspired by the news today, which showed friends, neighbors and total strangers helping each other begin the clean-up efforts in Texas. I can't be in Texas, but I can dig into my stash and make some pillowcases and quilts to send to people who have lost everything or to bring a smile to a child's face with something made "just for them". Won't you join me?
Our group is using this tutorial to make pillowcases. It's well written and simple, and if you are working with a group, it's very simple to "kit up". You may have your own favorite method or tutorial, and if you'd like to share a link for that in the comments, feel free!
Please send your donation to this address:
The Glade Church
ATTN: Sarah Craig
9000 Stewarts Ferry Pike
Mount Juliet, TN 37122
Be sure to include your name and address in your package so we can let you know it arrived safely. I'll be updating with pictures of the donations themselves, and hopefully of some of the recipients as they are distributed.
Hugs!
Sarah

A wonderful idea. Quilts of Compassion (a former H2H receipient) is requesting quilt donations. They will deliver them to Texas around the end of October.
ReplyDeleteOh I will share this with our Groups in Quebec, we had so much quilty love when there was the mosque shooting last year.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the "deadline" date for you to receive the pillowcases?
ReplyDeleteI've pulled fabric for 7 or so quilts and will start to sew now. I'll look through the quilts hanging around here and see if there is at least one I can send on soon. Thanks for being a point of contact and receiving and getting these items to kids and adults as needed.
ReplyDeleteI've passed this info on two both of my quilt guilds. Hubby and I are native Texans, and both of us have lots of family in the Houston/Harvey areas.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I am sending my things directly to a friend near Houston. Feels good to help :)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are doing this!
ReplyDeleteWhen is the deadline to send items to this address? Wonderful how all are helping.
ReplyDeleteDo you suggest only cotton fabric or could we also use cotton flannel? I use to make theme pillow cases from flannel to my girls, they loved them, but then we live in cooler climates.
ReplyDeleteHello from Baytown, TX located 20 miles east of Houston on I10. The damage is unbelievable and people will be in cleanup and recovery mode for months. I made 26 pillowcases in the last two days to take to a shelter here. So many people have had to throw out everything and rip the walls out of their homes. I think a colorful pillowcase to put their head down after a hard day is the perfect way to help. I will be happy to help on this end. Also about an hour from Beaumont which has not had water since the storm flooded their city

I use this tutorial: http://www.southernfabricblog.com/15-minute-pillow-with-french-seams/
ReplyDeleteI'll be sending you a few pillowcases soon!
Great project. I will make some pillowcases :)
ReplyDeleteSarah, Are you wanting quilts and blankets of any kind (used?) or just new quilts? I have already made some pillowcases so will get them in the mail this week with a few of my stash quilts.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, I've got 6 pillowcases to send...and at least one quilt from my finished stash.
ReplyDeleteI have a few baby quilts finished and will forward them. Also will make some pillow cases. Thanks for letting us know about this need.
ReplyDeleteI have pulled fabric and trims for about 25 pillowcases. Will begin today to sew. So great that we can send them to your church. Thanks for being a blessing and helping others to be helpful!
ReplyDeleteFinally got a chance to try the burrito tutorial. My pillow case is headed out this week! Thank you for spearheading this.
ReplyDeleteJust finished the french seams on my 22 pillowcases...and am pressing them. Wondering about how to fold them - will each one need to be in a plastic bag? If you can respond, I will be happy to follow your instructions. Otherwise, I will just pack them in a box and mail to the address you gave.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to send some quilts I have as well as pillow cases. thanks for what you're doing!
