I May Have A Scrap Problem: I Got Trimmings, Lots of Trimmings...

Hi, all!

I love trimming HSTs, I love trimming HSTs, I love trimming HSTs - maybe if I keep saying it, I'll believe it soon!  Well, while I may not love trimming them, I do like playing with them, so I'll take the good with the bad and power through....

You may remember this tub of bonus HSTs from last week - my April challenge for Scrap Attack 2018.  That tub is about 9 x15 x 4, and packed full of all different sizes of HSTs.  Very few of them have been trimmed to a consistent size - most are just as I cut them off, unpressed and untrimmed.

Since last Wednesday, I've pulled out some fairly large HSTs - the blue bonus HSTs I made when I was piecing Lilli's annual quilt last year.  I've trimmed all of those to 3.5".  I didn't count, but I think there are about 150 of them.  It barely made a dent, but it's a start!

Then, when I was in Target the other day, they were clearing out all the Easter stuff from the Dollar Spot and putting out new spring and Mother's Day merchandise. My favorite time!  I love getting first dibs in this section - it was all I could do to not offer to help them unload the boxes just so I could see it all first!  But I found these great glass jars with enormous cork stoppers, and realized they would be perfect to hold some of those bonus HSTs.... so now I have a very attractive visual reminder to work on my HSTs!

So I feel like I've made a good start on my April project, especially since this one is small enough to take with me on vacation in a couple of weeks.  I can think of lots of smaller projects that I can make, too!  It will be interesting to see if there are enough HSTs to make a quilt, but I don't think there will be.

And speaking of HSTs and projects, here's a beauty for you to enjoy...

Julie is really rocking those HSTs, isn't she?  This is definitely some great inspiration!

Hugs and Happy Scrapping!!

  1. Trimming HST's does get tedious but what a sense of accomplishment the more you trim. Then when they're all done, well, you can take the grandchildren to the ice cream shop and celebrate!

  4. I love the designs they can make. I hate the trimming too! Can't wait to see what you make of yours.

  5. Amazing what you do with a simple, little triangle!!!

  6. The trimmings being too small to make into a quilt can be used to fill floor pillows your grands would love... Mine did.

  7. My collection of hst cutoffs are too small. I'm periodically going through the collection and removing those I know I'll never use for anything. Good luck with bringing yours under control.

  9. Fantastic buy on those jars, especially the extra wide mouths to reach into. Bad grammar there!

  10. Just think how thrilled you'll be one day to reach in and pull out a bunch of trimmed HSTs to create something wonderful! It will be like a gift to yourself.

  13. I'm always jealous of your Target finds. We don't live close to a Target. When I get a chance to visit one, it's a major treat.
Trimming blocks or HSTs is very soothing to me. I put on a Jane Austen video and am perfectly happy as I slice away.

  14. So funny to read this as I was just doing the same thing yesterday! Have a Bonnie Hunter project I wanted to do that calls for scrap HSTs. Up to now all of mine got thrown in a bin although I tried to "sort" them into baggies of approximate similar sizes. Like you I've now been going through some of the bags and sorting out or cutting down to the size I need as well as more efficiently sorting other sizes as I come across them. Hmmm, maybe from now on I will cut them to specific sizes when I'm cleaning up other projects?!?!?

Love, love, love those jars, wonder if my Target has them!
