Well, Friday has finally rolled around again, and you know what that means - it's time to get our whoop whoop on! Have you been working on something great this week? It's time to share - even if it's not a finish, or even if it's not something quilt-y! Let's celebrate the little things!
*&*&*&*&*&*&*
Having said that, I have something to share that's not so little - in fact, it's about 88" square! But first, let me share with you my view this morning when I woke up...
Let me tell you, it's kind of strange to look out your window on your first morning in a new place and see a different flag flying! But we've already started our Canadian experience, driving through a Tim Horton's at nearly midnight for a donut and a double-double (coffee with two sugars and two creams) before arriving and collapsing at the hotel. We've come for our niece's wedding, and I can finally reveal the quilt I made for her and her soon-to-be husband, Geoff, because by the time this posts, I will have given it to them!
You may remember seeing bits and pieces of this quilt on social media, but I'm happy today to reveal the whole enchilada! (Do they have Mexican food in Canada? Hmmm....)
Let's move back a little bit and see some more of this quilt, which, in my humble opinion, is a beauty! A big beauty, too...
So large that I had to lay it out on the grass to take a good picture of it!
I'm so in love with this quilt, I may need to make one for myself. Lots of colorful scraps, alternated with "geeky" fabrics - text prints, math prints, technical drawings - mostly in lighter neutrals.
And on the back, a dinosaur print, just for my niece! (Our happy dance GIF today is for her, too - dinosaurs are her favorites!) I fell in love with this piece of dino fabric - it was just exactly what I was looking for, but there was only about a yard on the bolt. So it's mixed in with one of my favorite background "neutrals" - the black and white "etch-a-sketch" graphic. And can you see the border? It's a diagonal print of the same graphic black and white, in smaller scale. I love the look of a bias binding, but not the hassle of making it, so when I saw this fabric, I bought all of it that was left on the bolt!
I've had some interesting thoughts about marriage while working on this quilt, too. I look at the "nerdy" background fabrics as the framework of the marriage - what signifies 'them' to me. Then all the bright scraps in between those background fabrics are the events of a married life - the bits and pieces of dresses, shirts, quilts - all representing memories. I can look at the prints in this quilt and remember the projects that they came from, stretching back over many years. A good marriage is like that - lots of memories overlaying a common foundation. I hope someday my niece will make her own quilt using bits and pieces collected over the years representing her own memories of a happy life!
So - - - can I get a whoop whoop?
*&*&*&*&*&*&*
And now it's your turn!
What's got you whooping it up today?
What's making you do a little happy dance?
Share! We want to dance right along with you,
And it's always more fun to dance with friends.
The party will stay open until Sunday midnight.
Hope to see you there!
Hugs!
Sarah
Wow! This is huge and really a m a z i n g !
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty, full of memories, it's a treasure!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe quilt is beautiful! It’s such a nice size.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm hoping it's big enough for their bed - but it's at least big enough for two to snuggle under on the sofa!
DeleteLove it! I hope to make a postage stamp quilt someday.
ReplyDeleteI've made several like this. Never a true postage stamp (1" squares) but this size is not too bad to make!
DeleteBeautiful finish - a special keepsake! Welcome to Canada - yes we have Mexican food here too :)! A double double eh? One thing we learned is a regular coffee in Canada means 1 sugar and 1 cream - in the US it means a Black coffee :)! Enjoy your Niece's wedding and maybe a bit of sightseeing while you are here!
ReplyDeleteThanks! We're having fun so far but today the wedding festivities begin so less time for sightseeing. Plenty of time for double doubles, though!
DeleteReady to type this comment, and it dawned on me this was your Friday Linky! It's Friday? Yes, to this gorgeous, scrappy, life-infused quilt, and may I wish them a marriage like my week. May they awake one day to find 50 years have passed like the blink of an eye. Many congratulations to all!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie - I'll pass on your wishes!
DeleteWow, Sarah! I know your niece will treasure this, and you should write in a card, the meaning of it for you and the desire that she make one of her own happy memories one day! That is awesome! I love those bright scraps interspersed with the other fabrics. Great job. Have fun in Canada. Watch out for the toll roads! Our first trip there, we got on one and there was no toll booth! A few weeks later we got a bill for $17 dollars in the mail! LOL If you are anywhere close to Niagara Falls, GO!! It's beautiful! We visited a couple of times when my brother lived in Port Huron, MI.
ReplyDeleteWe are in Calgary which (I think) is a long way from Niagara Falls - but we saw the Falls a few years ago when we visited Hamilton and Toronto. Amazing!!!
DeleteHave a wonderful trip-you outdid yourself with this quilt-it's a beauty of scraps!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love it too!
DeleteWelcome to Canada. The quilt is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris! We are really enjoying ourselves here!
DeleteThe quilt is gorgeous, Sarah, and your thoughts on marriage are beautiful. I hope you enjoy your visit to Canada :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Leanne! And we are...
DeleteOh Sarah...it's stunning. This post is one of my favorites you've done with your thoughts on marriage. Hope you have a great trip!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Summer!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Denise!
DeleteI hope you enjoy your stay in Canada. I LOVE Tim Horton's when I visit. But your wedding quilt is amazing; I am sure all the love that has gone into it will blanket their hopes and dreams together. Great techie fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I had been collecting the techie fabrics for a while, and was please to have this perfect opportunity to use them!
DeleteIt truly is a beauty. Love all it's scrappy goodness. Enjoy your Canada adventure. Congrats to your niece.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emily!
DeleteYour niece's wedding quilt is just beautiful! So much love represented by all those pieces. And I really like your philosophy about it, too.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is beautiful. Best wishes to the happy couple!
ReplyDeleteYou can have a Whoop Whoop and 1/2. That's a beautiful custom quilt. Best Wishes to the happy couple.
ReplyDeleteHugs
those dancing dinos!!! too funny!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. As soon as you described the light prints as geeky, it made me think of your niece who liked Dr. Who. Is it the same one? Your thoughts about marriage depicted in the quilt ring true and add to the special flavor of this wedding treasure.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Canada! Time to get out your atlas and figure out how large our wonderful country really is, and see what we have to offer. If you are in Calgary (where I am, also) then hopefully you can get to Banff, or go East to Drumheller. Great areas to visit. Loved your quilt. Jill in Calgary/Phoenix
ReplyDeleteYour wedding quilt is beautiful! I'm sure your niece will love it and I bet she'll be displaying the back side of it often.
ReplyDeleteI totally love that quilt!!!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to my country, Sarah! Where are you visiting? I know you'll be super-busy but man, if you're close, like I was to you in February, I'd do my best to meet you...at a Tim's! lol You should try Second Cup, much like Starbucks, but Canadian owned. And uh yeah, we have Mexican food in Canada... sheesh! LOL In Essex County, Ontario, we employ a TON of Mexican migrant workers to help with all the fruits and veggies we grow here, so we have some pretty decent Mexican restaurants. ;-) We also have a ton of terrific wineries, and then there are the Great Lakes. Lovely time of year to be here, and I hope you have a most wonderful time, and learn lots about us. :-)
ReplyDeleteDuh, I got all excited about you being here, and forgot to say how much I LOVE the quilt you made them, holy WOW! The dinosaur backing is perfect. I also really like your thoughts on marriage too. ;-)
DeleteYou need to print out this blog post and give it to your niece. Nice quilt and great sentiment.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Canada. I hope you enjoy your trip.
ReplyDeleteHello. Your niece has a wonderful aunt and now a wonderful magnificent quilt. Is There any particular pattern that you used or was it all improv? So full of love and memories and so special. Thank you for posting the pictures and the wonderful blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cindy! The pattern is a simple postage stamp quilt - 2.5" squares sewn together. This particular quilt is arranged 44 x 44 - so 1936 squares and 88" square!
DeleteSarah, I like your analogy of this quilt to a marriage. That makes this quilt extra special. Maybe that's why I never finished my first quilt. It was done with cardboard templates, rulers (I mean a 12" old fashioned ruler) and all hand stitched. I had appliqued interlocking hearts on a block that was already cut to size. No one had taught me to cut the block larger and then cut it to size. My then husband told me that the motif was not centered. I told him that it was. He TOLD me to get my seam gauge and he would prove to me that it wasn't. It was 1/16" off center. I was crushed that he could tell that across our rather large living room. So, I put it all in a box and have never touched it since. We've been divorced for 20 years and it was several, several years before he walked out that he made that comment. It just shows how I could do nothing to please him. We literally did not speak to each other for over 15 years and rarely speak now. I have no reason to talk to him - we sat on the same pew at our daughter's wedding and said nothing to each other. I was on death's door and he never asked how I was. Anyhow, my mother even took the quilt and didn't know how to finish it because I was putting it together with lap quilting instead of making a flimsy and then quilting it. It's a technique made popular in the 80's by Georgia Boonesteele. So, it's still in my attic. I guess that quilt is similar to that marriage, too. Unsatisfactory and useless! LOL You did a great and wonderful job! susan.dietrich@cox.net
ReplyDeleteWhat a special wedding quilt, with so much meaning and memories packed into every stitch! Best wishes to the happy couple, and I hope you have a wonderful trip. Also, I hope you make a wrong turn and end up "accidentally" finding a fabulous quilt shop while you're there... because really, why else do we travel?! '-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the quilt and I love your thoughts on marriage...our 47 years of marriage have sure had their share of silliness and stitches... Quilts are just full of meaning!! My "Whoop Whoop" is that I am finishing up about 4 dozen shields for the charity Days for Girls. It is because of your Hands 2 Help (seriously!!) that I got in contact with this charity again after about 10 years. I found a group that I can join about once a month in another town but I can do lots of sewing for them at home. I love seeing the stack of finishes. It makes me happy and I have my "Whoop Whoop" for the month! Thanks, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! Best wishes to them for lots of happiness and cuddles under this lovely quilt.
ReplyDeleteOops! Sorry about the multiple entries. I was having trouble with the crop tool using my iPad so I switched to my computer not realizing that my entry actually saved (uncropped). I'm a new follower. 😆
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful! I love how you mixed the brights with "geeky" lights and your idea of memories for their marriage.
Calgary is two hours from where I live. Hopefully you can also fit a poutine and some butter tarts into your schedule.
ReplyDeleteGreat post today. Lovely quilt. Fun dinosaur. What more could anyone ask for?
ReplyDeleteThat is a great quilt and a great way to look at marriage. I'm sure they will treasure it always.
