Hi, all!
Can you believe it? Five years ago I started writing a blog, simply to chronicle my efforts to deal with a fabric stash that was becoming a (little) bit out of hand. I had just begun quilting as a hobby, with no intention of doing anything with it other than that. My first blogposts are so funny to go back and read - terrible pictures, usually only commented on by my niece (thanks, Heather!) but I kept at it.
One of my very first quilts... |
And one of our first ministry quilts! |
We've watched my granddaughter Lilli grow up on the blog. Here's her first appearance…
…and here's a picture from yesterday, her seventh birthday!
We also met Emmalyn on the day she was born…
…and look how much she has grown! (Isn't it funny how kids love to have their pictures made with the Old Navy mannequins?)
Five years and eight hundred and five posts later, I am seriously into quilting, working with a fabulous group of women and men and together we have made and given away more than one thousand quilts to people dealing with serious illness, emotional or spiritual trauma, new babies, and victims of natural disasters. More than three quarters of the quilts we have given away have gone to people outside our church family, requested by the members of our church to show others God's love.
I have come to know so many of you, who have joined in our work by donating your UFOs, blocks, fabric, and scraps. You have no idea how big a part of the quilt ministry you are - we are overwhelmed and encouraged every time we receive a box of donations!
This quilt was made to commemorate giving away our 500th quilt last June. It is made of hand blocks representing each of the people who have quilted, donated, or in any way participated in creating the quilts we had made.
I've also been honored to host the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge for four years now - and so many of you have joined with me in creating beautiful quilts to help brighten the lives of people in need. I look forward to this event every year, and am humbled that so many of you do too!
Anyway - thank you so much for reading my humble little blog and encouraging me so much for all these years! I appreciate each of you more than I can possibly say… and so I have a little something to give away to one lucky reader! (Please excuse the quality of the pictures - we haven't had sunshine here in about two weeks, I think! With rain in the forecast for Thursday, I took the best light I could get!)
I'm calling this pretty little quilt "Peppermint Candy" - isn't it sweet? It's backed with a great Christmas text print, too.
So many of you have mentioned that you regret not having time to make a Christmas quilt, I thought it would make a nice little giveaway item!
It measures about 45" x 54", and is made from all 100% cotton fabrics and Warm and White batting. The quilting is lots of swirls and it's been washed, so it's all lovely soft and crinkly!
So how can you enter the giveaway? Simple!
Get one entry by simply leaving a comment on this post. Let's make it fun - since the quilt is called "Peppermint Candy", tell me your all-time favorite candy in your comment!
Leave a second comment if you are an old or new follower for an additional entry!
That's it - no hoops to jump through! You can enter the giveaway until about 5:00 PM CST on Wednesday, December 24th, and I'll draw a winner and announce it on Christmas morning!
Once again, thanks so much for being on this journey with me - it's been a fun, wild ride and I can't wait to see the next five years!!
Hugs!
Sarah
Sarah, I am so, so grateful for you. I keep praying that I would be able to be part of such a ministry. I keep giving away quilts, one at a time, and long for people to work with me. You have been self sacrificing with joy and enthusiasm. Your blog keeps me stitching.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, anything chocolate scratches my holiday candy itch.
I'm writing to thank you for your generous spirit....the world needs more unselfish folks like you.......inspirational doesn't cover it. Congrats. on your blog anniversary and Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI've been following you on Bloglovin for 2 years, I think.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite candy has chocolate and caramel in it. Nuts are optional.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on meeting your goal! I remember those "books" of Lifesavers as a Christmas tradition. I used to eat all the chocolate pieces out of the Necco wafers as a kid. But my marooned-on-an-island, all-time favorite candy is M&Ms.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all your milestones! I KNEW you would reach that 1,000 quilt before the end of the year! My all-time favorite candy is my momma's homemade chocolate fudge. YUM! Just wanted to let you know BIG things are happening with our quilt ministry. :)
ReplyDeleteHas it really been 5 years? Seems like I just met you. Congratulations on the milestones and thank you for inviting us to come along for the ride. I guess I would have to pick M&Ms.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the milestone ... I've not been here for all 5 years, but I've enjoyed my "stay" so far. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite candy is Turtles. My dad always had a box of Turtles and a Whitman's Sampler under the tree on Christmas Eve, so eating turtles always reminds me of Christmas.
And I'm not an old follower nor a new follower - I'm an in-between follower. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite candy is tootsie rolls. I've always loved them, they just take me back....
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog on Feedly
ReplyDeleteI first found you early this year back in the spring I think or maybe it was last year - I 'm not sure time flies. You and your crew of quilters do such a wonderful job you make so many quilts for others.
ReplyDeleteMy all time favorite candy is chocolate covered nuts or anything chocolate
I am a fairly new follower of about a year.
ReplyDeleteI am an "older" follower. I think I participated in two of the H2H drives. Thanks for the chance to win. What an adorable quilt!
ReplyDeleteIs there such a thing as a favorite candy? I love chocolate and things with chocolate (Snickers, Twix, M&M's... the list goes on.) Have a blessed holiday season, Sarah.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the big 5! I love going back and seeing where I've been. What a great trip down memory lane to see you too! Looking forward to another 5 years of fabulous posts and inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYou have my dream job! Thanks for all the posts and inspiration and linkups and quilty goodness.

ReplyDeletemissysaprons@gmail.com
Although I don't comment very often.....Longer time follower...Love the work you do with your quilts.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on all your milestones! I've been along since almost the beginning and it's been wonderful to see things grow and the lives you and your quilters and quilts have touched. Candy...it's actually easier to tell you what candy I don't like, because there are/were only a couple (remember Snaps? Ick...! My every-kind-of candy eating days are mostly in the past, except that I am never far from some Ghiradelli Twilight Delight dark chocolate in this house. So I guess that's it for now!
ReplyDeleteFavorite candy is peanut M&M's.
ReplyDeleteI'm an old follower.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on all the milestones! Isn't it amazing how you have one plan (just to make quilting a hobby) and it goes in a whole different direction. In your case it was a direction that has benefitted so many people and touched their lives, ours included. My favorite candy is Brach's Raspberry Filled hard candies. I can only find them at Christmas time and buy several bags to get me through the next 12 months but they never seem to last that long.
ReplyDeleteI think I've been a follower for over close to two years and have enjoyed all your posts.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Sarah! I have so loved following along with you. Your posts are always so inspiring.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite candy is pretzel M&M's :-)
ReplyDeleteWell its not my favorite candy but your quilt reminds me of the Ribbon Candy Mama use to put (unwrapped yet ) in the stocking each year!
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying you blog for about 2 1/2 years. Thank you for posting, sharing and all you do.
ReplyDeleteI love Orange slices and any chocolate with caramel. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! It has been wonderful following your blog, seeing your quilts, reading the posts. I love sugar and haven't yet found a sweet I don't like. In Brazil we make some cookies called Pao de Mel (Honey Bread), which are round and chocolate-covered. I make them here at Christmas although there we eat them year-round. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, great milestone. My favorite candy is carmel anything.
ReplyDeleteI follow you with bloglovin
ReplyDeleteSarah, once again you have demonstrated your generosity of spirit. What a sweet giveaway! I like peppermint. Merry Christmas to you and yours and blessings overflowing!
ReplyDeleteWhat s lovely quilt. I am enjoying following you and your quilt ministry adventures. I have contributed to hands2help for the last two years and I look forward to the next campaign.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 5 years of blogging! Your blog is a favorite to many and we always are inspired when we come to see you. I have been blogging about as long as you.
ReplyDeleteI made a quilt once with the peppermint theme. The name was "Life Is Like A Bowlful Of Peppermint". It was a charity quilt that helped raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Charity quilting is close and dear to my heart as well. :)
My favorite candy is anything chocolate with a nut in it. :)
what a nice give-away
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Your quilt journey has been rich in beautiful quilts, comforted people, and so much more. You are an inspiration and I know God is blessed by your efforts as well as the people you sew with and give quilts to. Looking forward to hands2help again.

ReplyDeleteI love peppermint patties.....what a wonderfully generous giveaway!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a long time follower
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. Pictures of the grandgirls, then and now - pictures of the quilts of old... love the blue and brown combo, and the plain 4 square blocks with a print as sashing - so innovative. One thousand quilts - bet it's more than that now!!! Some people wonder what their life is for, what is their purpose... You, my dear, do not need to wonder. (Well, and because of you, I don't wonder either. Thank you!)
ReplyDeleteFavorite candy, that's hard to say. I guess it's well made Fairy Food. A crystalline center covered with chocolate. Apparently they are hard to make. Easy to burn the centers or make them too dense. Otherwise, I never met a candy I didn't like. LOL
Hugs
I'd like to treat the world to peppermint patties; they are my favorite since childhood.

I'm an "old" follower.
ReplyDeleteI love candy canes. So, I made a sleigh using candy canes and glue one kit kat bar to the canes and then added 4 hersey minatures to the top of the kit kat bar; then another layer of 3 hersey minatures; then a layer of 2 and then 1 so you should have a total of 10. Then I tied a ribbon around the sleigh and added a bow. There will go to my mom's side of the family as part of their Christmas gifts. My white Christmas tree is done in red balls and yes, candy canes. So, your quilt will look pretty darn cute on the back of the couch. Just perfect. I would just love your quilt so much. It comes from you and your heart. That is a good thing. Thank you for the chance to win and Merry Christmas to you.

You hardly mentioned YOUR THOUSANDTH QUILT!!! Congratulations! I'm coming to the conclusion that I like the process of quilting more than I care about the outcome... maybe I should send you some UFOs!
ReplyDeleteI've lived outside of North America for so long that, although dark chocolate M&Ms are banned from my shopping cart, and licorice allsorts are required in my stocking, I'd vote for butterscotch Lifesavers as the candy I miss most.
I've been following you since you did a group tutorial on I-forget-what, at least 2 years ago. Does that make me a new follower, and old follower, or a middle-aged follower? ;)
ReplyDeleteAll time favorite candy would have to be a Baby Ruth Bar!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Sarah! I'm so happy to call you a friend. You have such a generous and giving heart.

ReplyDeleteWow! Congratulations!! That's a wonderful ministry, and one whose results will only really be known in Heaven. I love anything that combines mint and chocolate, or peanut butter and chocolate...or just chocolate! Thanks for the great giveaway. The quilt is beautiful!

ReplyDeleteCadbury milk chocolate MADE in the UK....it just tastes better than what is made here!!! But US made has to be See's Rocky Road.
ReplyDeleteI switched to whole food plant based eating four years ago. My favorite sweets recipe is almond joy bars that a friend developed. It has coconut, peanut butter, oat bran, soy powder, honey, vanilla. and carob. It cannot be considered a "health food", but they sure are good for an occasional treat.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy following your blog. Your quilt ministry is amazing. The Lord has been guiding me to use my quilting skill to serve those in need. About six weeks ago I was inspired to make quilts for the homeless in my city. Supplies and money came together to enable me to make 12 ( approximately 60x80) fleece backed quilts with batting and colorful tops. I have the finishing touches to do on the last quilt, and they will be ready to donate.
ReplyDeleteYour granddaughters are beautiful and I'm sure love your quilts. Thanks for all of your charitable giving with your ministry. Way to go! I'm sure your charity has touched many lives.
