I May Have A Scrap Problem - June Results and July Goals!

It seems that June just flew by, doesn't it?  So much going on with the beginning of summer, and that definitely made a difference in my time for working with scraps - but I did make some progress!  I'll show you the small progress first, though...

This was my June goal.  And this was scrap tub "B"...

Oh my goodness was that tub packed full of stuff!  I pressed and cut, pressed and folded, stashed away fabric in color-sorted tubs, and this is where it stood at the end of the month...

So I made a good dent in it, but still didn't manage to clear it out.  So for July, I'm going to continue working on tub B, but with a couple of clear projects in mind.  My granddaughter has requested a scrappy blue quilt as her annual quilt this year (because "Nana, you KNOW blue is my color!") and there were a lot of blues in this tub.  I will probably gather up 2.5" squares for that project.  And I'm thinking this might be a great place to find pieces for a scrappy version of Jamie Elfert's Summer Wedding quilt.  

So that will be my goal for July - finish up that dratted tub and collect pieces for two quilts.  Because I am DETERMINED to clean out that tub!!

And now for my big result - I finally finished the denim crescent quilt!!!!

I debated many ways to quilt this top, but in the end I decided just to quilt wavy lines across the quilt, about an inch or so apart.  The backing, which you can see here, is a piece I picked up in IKEA in Calgary.  Rather appropriate for the 4th of July, isn't it?  

Here you can see it hanging from a rung of my new quilt ladder!  I'm a little excited about both of these things....

Here you can see the texture of the quilting - I really like the way this looks!  I decided not to use batting on this one, because it was already so heavy.  I put a layer of white flannel between the front and back to minimize the feel of the seams in the denim, which were pretty bulky.

This shot really show off the ombre shading of the denim, achieved by sorting out my denim jeans scraps by color, then arranging them with the lightest on the top and the darkest on the bottom.  For those of you interested, the pattern is by Christina Cameli and can be found in her new book, Wedge Quilt Workshop.  

So that was my June, at least as far as the scraps went!  I'm glad to have finished the denim quilt, and look forward to using it, and I'll be very happy to get to the bottom of Scrap Tub "B"!

I May Have A Scrap Problem....A Little Bit of This and That

Well, it's been a scrappy happy week!  I've been a good girl and worked with my scraps A LOT this week, and I've got some good progress to show for it!  

First of all, I started cutting up the scraps in the infamous Tub C...

...and filled up my two organizing boxes with the results of the first week of cutting.  Barely made a dent in the big tub, but at least it's a start!  

I'm still trying to come up with a great design for the second part of this month's challenge, to make something out of all these pieces I'm cutting!

And then I needed a background for a new quilt with appliquéd pieces, and suddenly remembered the containers of old jeans that I had stashed away...

...and after a long afternoon of sorting and cutting, I had the beginnings of a great quilt background!

I can't wait to start appliquéing the wedge crescents onto this background - I think it's going to be fabulous.  But I have some time-sensitive things to work on instead, so it will have to wait for a while!

I also want to share a beautiful vintage quilt top I had the honor of quilting and binding - this is a beautiful, scrappy thing! The diamond points seem to be feed sack material, and I believe the backgrounds are made of sugar sacks.  The weave and texture of each is different, although they are the same color.

Oh, the history that must be contained in this quilt!  The woman who made it pieced the diamond blocks by hand, then (thankfully) sewed the blocks together by machine.  Despite the age of this top, it was in very good condition and held up well to the quilting.  It's very large - even larger than it seems, because I've got it folded over at the top so it wouldn't drag on the ground!  Isn't it beautiful?

So that's all my scrappy doings for the week - I'm feeling like that scrap monster is a little tamer these days!

Make-A-List Monday - Back to the Real World!

Hi, all!

After an absolutely gorgeous weekend, it's Monday again, with a whole new week full of days to fill with lots of fun sewing!  Let's see how last week's list went first, though...

1.  Quilt two quilt tops for Heartbuilders.

Done!  These two are so pretty - pieced by Deborah S. and headed out this week!

2.   Work on piecing my new project, a wedge quilt from Christina Cameli's new book.

In progress - I've pieced all the wedges, and also the denim background (made from old jeans).  At least I can see what it will look like!

3.  Continue cutting up scraps and plan a new scrap project using some of what I've cut!

As usual, this is an "in progress" all the time - but at least my stash of cut pieces is growing!  I've also got an idea rolling around in my head for a quilt but I need to get it on paper....

4.  Package up two more sets of scraps for giveaway and get one in the mail.

Done!  It's been fun giving away some of my scraps as part of the pre-Hands2Help quilt-along!  And it has made a little bit of a dent in all those tubs...

5.  Time to work on some more administrative stuff for Hands2Help - which starts in just a little less than two weeks!

Done!  More sponsors are rolling every day!

6.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

It was a pretty easy week - only two quilts.  This one went to a woman who may possible have a tumor in her stomach...

...and this quilt went to a gentleman in the hospital with blood and kidney issues.

I'm happy with my progress for last week, plus I got to do a little bit of fun sewing.  I'm loving that wedge quilt, although it may have to be put aside this week for a while as I work on some time-sensitive projects.  Let's see what's on tap for this week...

1.  Press under all the edges of the arches for my Half and Half quilt, and start appliquéing them to the background.

2.  Meet with a new customer about a t-shirt quilt. 
(Graduation t-shirt season starts early around here, y'all!)

3.  Start work on a quilt for a special occasion.

4.  Mail off two Heartbuilder quilts.

5.  Order fabric for several upcoming projects.

6.  Pick a pattern for this month's scrap quilt.

7.  Prep for this Saturday's Piece*Love*Quilt sewing day!

8.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

Definitely enough to keep me busy and out of trouble - plus Lilli and I will have a movie day on Thursday (no school) as we go to see The Greatest Showman one more time before it leaves town!  We may even sing out loud in the theater....
