Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? A Fun Week!

Hi, all!

It's been a long week, but it's finally here - Friday!  And we all know what that means - it's time for us to get our whoop whoop on!  Let's get started!

It's been a busy week around here, with lots of "new home" tasks to do and lots of packing going on.  But I did manage to get in some fun...

I finished a quilt (more on this one next week)...

...spent some fun time with this little monkey, who put on eye shadow to go to the movies....

...shared some Starbucks with this growing-up-too-fast beauty, who helped me with some moving-in tasks at the house...

...received and arranged some new furniture for the new living room...

...and sold all the vinyl flooring that loaded down those shelves!

It's been a pretty good week, even though both houses are kind of a mess, because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel when I look at views like this...

Looks pretty inviting, doesn't it?

I May Have A Scrap Problem... Something A Little Different!

Hi, all!

It's 2020, and I still have a scrap problem - how about you?  I haven't had much time this week to sew, or even check out the internet much, but I did come across a great new way to use scraps today.  And after all, everyone needs a new way to use up their scraps, right?

This was the first thing I saw - and as I have a pair of lampshades just like that, and I really don't like them, I immediately saw the potential!  Now, Pinterest is an amazing place, and when I started searching there, I found lots more great ideas!

Look at this adorable table!  I've had tables in the past that looked like this, and they get old and beat up so easy.  But this would be fun to do!

And how about a pretty stool or chair?  Both of these make me want to run to the flea market and see what nasty looking thing I can find to recover with fabric and make beautiful!!

And here's the magic thing you'll need to redecorate your furniture with fabric...

Mod Podge was so popular when I was a teenager - we used paper to decoupage literally everything!  I'm kind of excited to give this a try sometime this year - maybe as  part of decorating my new quilt studio after we move!

Can I Get a Whoop Whoop? Easin' on Down The Road...

Hi, all!

Wow, has it been week!  But it's finally Friday, and that means it's time to get our whoop whoop on!  I'm excited to have some things to share this week, so let's get started...

If you'll remember, last week I didn't have much to show because I had been painting.  Well, I painted some more this week, and I learned a valuable lesson while doing so.  My first attempt at chalk painting yielded this...

I wasn't very happy with the way it finished, and sent this pic to my daughter (who has done a lot of chalk painting) and asked her why it was so streaky.  After much searching on the internet and pondering, we decided that it was the wax - probably inexpertly applied (by me, definitely) and that I might have to sand it and repaint it.  But the next morning...

It looked like this!  The wax had finally dried (cured?) and the color was as even as I originally aimed for.  Hooray!  So occasionally, ignoring something long enough will make the problem go away!  I also painted this piece...

...and I'm happy with the way it turned out too, now that some time has passed.  Now my daughter tells me I need to recover my chairs!

And on the sewing front, I did manage to get some things moved on down the road...

I made two of these memory quilt tops, using denim shirts and Kona Snow.  Each of them has one block that has a monogramed shirt pocket on it...

...which I personally feel would be a great place to tuck kleenex, a cell phone, or ... I don't know .... chocolate???

And I made these two memory pillows, also from denim shirts.  They were super simple - just cut a large square from both front and back, and bind the edges.  The button placket on the front of the shirt can be opened to insert a pillow form.  

And last but not least, I did manage to finish the golf shirt memory quilt top...

I love the color combination of this top - it turned out much better than I anticipated!  So now it goes in the stack of quilt tops for this job as I work on three more - then I'll get down to quilting them all!

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? A Clean Start for the Year!

Hi, all!

It's the first Friday of the new year, and that means it's time to get our whoop whoop on!!  Are you ready?  New year, new starts, new goals - so let's share them all!

For me, the beginning of a new year means that it's time to clean up the sewing studio!  My daughter and I spent New Year's Eve (day) in the new IKEA in Memphis, and I indulged in lots of new shelves for my studio.  (An anniversary gift from my hubby!)  

Here's a picture of just one part of my studio prior to the clean-up and re-organization...

I didn't take pictures of all the messy areas in my studio, but this one should give you a pretty good idea of how disorganized and cluttered it was after all my fall and Christmas sewing.  And this was the good part of the room!

But just look at that same area now!  There are two new Kallax 2x2 shelf units in there, and I moved two of my Antonius wire systems to the end (I needed to make room in another area so they moved over here.)  I moved my monthly calendar over here, hung up a great piece of art by a friend, and hung the new sign I found today at Target that says "This is my happy place" - so true!!

This is a Kallax 5x5 shelf unit, and it replaces four old Cubicles units.  They were starting to lean in a rather frightening manner.  The bag on the floor has yarn I'm going to give to Lilli!

This is where the Antonius wire system used to be, alongside a wire baker's rack that was just a mess.  Now it's a 4x4 Kallax unit with two 2x2 Kallax units on top.  Look how nice that looks! And I love that all my shelving units match now - instead of the hodgepodge of shelving I had before....

And now for the fun part - here's my inspiration wall!  It has lots of things I love on it, and sometimes things that make me laugh.  It also has my weekly calendar, which shows things I have to do for the week (like nana duties and appointments) and also keeps track of upcoming projects.  Having them written down means I don't have to worry about remembering them!

And one more pretty wall - I changed out the Christmas wall quilt for this pretty one that Karrie Lyne Winter of Freckled Whimsy made for me back in 2010.  I also hung up the nifty crocheted bunting that I received in my Fair Trade Friday box this week - I think it's the perfect place for it!

So that's my refreshed studio - now I have to get back to work!!

And here's something I made right before Christmas but didn't share yet on the blog...

Emmy loves unicorns, and when I saw a unicorn jacket on a Target email, I headed right over to the store to pick one up.  Unfortunately, they were sold out of the one in the ad.  But I found a My Little Pony jacket with a hoodie that looked like a horse, mane and all, so I bought that and added a horn.  She loved it!!  This was her first time trying it on and she proceeded to neigh (loudly) like a unicorn....

...and then she got down on all fours and pranced around like a unicorn!!  And guess what - it turns out that apparently unicorns sing in a very high squeaky voice and VERY LOUDLY when riding in a car!  She loved her jacket which made me very very happy!

So - - - can I get a whoop whoop??

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? The First of 2016!!

Hi, all!

Can you believe that it's the first day of 2016???  The past year seems to have just flown by - at least for me!  I'm looking forward to another year full of quilt-making and creating, and I know you are too!  I hope you've been able to do some whooping this week, so let's get started and see what everyone's been up to!

I have not had the opportunity to sew much at all this week.  On Saturday morning after Christmas, we cleared out all the furniture and appliances from the kitchen...

...then over the next two days my husband ripped out the hardwood floors and laid down rosin paper...

...Monday and Tuesday he put down new sub-flooring...

Meanwhile, I was at work upstairs cleaning and re-organizing my sewing studio...

It's definitely a work in progress, and promises to get worse before it gets better...

...but at least I found the floor in front of my window again!!

And I re-organized all my thread!  The top of those two bookcases is going to be an ironing station now - I have a spare piece of plywood left over from the flooring to cover with batting and a pretty canvas.  I can't wait!  There's still a long way to go, but hopefully by next Friday, I'll have a clean and organized studio to share with you!!

After my husband finished with the sub-flooring, it became my turn to work on the floor.  

I spent Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday laying tile...

And when I quit Thursday night I was almost finished!

I still have about four pieces to cut, but they are going to be very tricky and I needed more brainpower than I had at the end of the day to do it then.  So that will be my project for Friday morning!

And one more thing I'm whooping about - - -

Thirty-seven years ago today I said "I do" to this great guy - and I haven't regretted it for a minute!  Here's to thirty-seven more!

Make-A-List Monday - errr, Tuesday…..

Hi, all!

I have to confess, daylight savings time messes me up big time!  I sat down to write my MALM post last night and promptly fell asleep - only to wake up at 10:15 with my husband ready to go to bed.  So we'll just call this a little "spring forward" this week for my to-do list!  And if there are any weird typos in this post, it's because I managed to sew through my left index finger yesterday and it's really hard to type with a bandaid on your finger!  

So here's how last week's list went...

1. Quilt the baby top.
I didn't get this particular one quilted, but I did quilt another… This one is for a young woman in our group who is due any day now!  Brooke did the piecing on it - so pretty!

2.  Quilt a top for a woman with leukemia.
I cannot lie - I didn't quilt this one, Debbie did - and she did a lovely job with it!  The center of the top was donated to us by a woman who said she thought it was "too busy" - all lovely Kaffe Fassett fabrics!  Betty added the borders, including a pretty pink flange.  Then Debbie quilted it beautifully, with feathers in the border and flowers in some of the hexes, random meander everywhere else.  Nice!

3.  Quilt a top for a man with a serious heart condition.

I did not quilt that quilt yet, but instead quilted this one for a woman whose son was just deployed to Afghanistan.  (I had prepared this one for straight line quilting for the woman with leukemia, then found out she preferred more color - so quilted this one quickly for another need!)  Marie pieced this pretty top!

4.  Paint the Singer 99 case.
Done!!!  Next up is to take that pretty piece of laminated fabric you see in the throat and put a border around the case…

5.  Deconstruct 16 t-shirts for a commission quilt.
I did not get to this one at all….

6.  Write a Working Wednesday post.
Or this one….  :-(

7.  Write a post for the ministry blog.
However, I did do two new posts for the ministry blog!  One was a repeat of my Whoop Whoop Friday post about Pam's quilt, but the other was a couple of montage photos of the quilts we gave away in January and February - all 51 of them!

8.  Choose a pattern for a gift quilt.
I'm still working on this - I may actually give them the Swoon quilt I started last year on vacation - it might just be the kick in the pants I need to finish that one!

9.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that arise.

Done!  I've also worked on a quilt for a serviceman with PTSD, another deployment quilt for a young wife, and a quilt for a woman just diagnosed with breast cancer.  Pictures of those will be forthcoming - just not yet!  A couple of them are still in the wash…

And on a very happy note, my husband surprised me and took care of an item that was on my list a couple of weeks ago…

He hung the shelves in my studio!!  What a guy!!  I still need to decide what to put on them - he just put some stuff he found lying around.  I have no idea where that batt came from!

And now for this week…

1.  Straight-line quilt the camo Hunter's Star quilt.

2.  Custom quilt the butterfly quilt.

3.  Straight-line quilt the baby star quilt.

4.  Deconstruct the t-shirts.

5.  Put the laminated border on the Singer 99 case.

6.  Cut the pieces for two baby granny-square quilts.

7.  Write a Working Wednesday post.

8.  Write the post for the H2H signups!  This Sunday, y'all!!

9.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that arise.

Whew!  That should keep me busy!!  At least I won't be getting in trouble…  yeah, right!  

And for those of you who enjoy seeing pictures of the princesses, here's one for you!  I had both of them yesterday, and it's so sweet to see them play together.  Lilli is absolutely the BEST big sister - she's patient and sweet and just loves Emmy to pieces!   

And Emmy is getting ready to turn two - her newest word is "mine" and her newest sign is rubbing her hand in the center of her chest, which means "my turn"!  It should be interesting to see how her terrible twos turn out!  Little Miss Personality….
