How to Ward Off Empty-Nest Syndrome....

Hi, all!

Miss Lilli has started pre-school this morning - so two days a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have about five hours to do whatever I want!  And just so I don't fritter this time away, I'm going to start posting on Tuesday nights under the title "Toddler-less Tuesdays"!  I hope this will keep me accountable for the extra time, so it's productive!

But in the meantime, I want to join in the Tuesday Treasures parade - I finally got some pictures taken of some of my treasures and want to share two in particular today.

This picture was drawn by my great-grandmother, who was a fine artist, working mostly in charcoals and pastels.  Unfortunately, she was also a farm wife and mother, so she probably didn't get the recognition she deserved.  But her pieces are highly prized among our family members, and I think each of us has at least one.  I think I have another one upstairs, but as my grandmother is no longer around to tell me for sure, I'll just have to hope it's one of hers!  She was my great-grandfather's third wife, and mother to his 14th, 15th and 16th children, along with a couple of still-born children.  My grandmother was the 15th child, and she was born when my great-grandfather was 73 years old!  I don't know a whole lot about him - obviously he died a long time before I was born - but I do have this wonderful picture that I found in the attic after my grandmother died.....

Written on the back, in my grandmother's handwriting, it says "Daddy and his BIG hog!"  In a time when photographs were hard to take (how in the world did they get the hog to stand still that long?) and expensive, this photograph was also colorized and framed in a $6.95 cent frame (I know this because the price is stamped into the back of the frame!)  So now it hangs in a place of honor in the "Rogue's Gallery" collection of photos at my home.

I hope you like my Tuesday Treasures as much as I do!

Later!

Sarah

  2. Your great-grandmother was indeed a fantastic artist. How gifted.

Very interesting picture of your great grandfather. It is a good question about how they got the pig to remain still. Lots of corn?

  4. Your treasures are great..... It's great you have that history connection. Is the picture done by GGM a self portrait do you think?

  6. That is a beautiful portrait by your great-grandmother! Who is the subject, do you know? And your great-grandfather with his hog is really a treasure too. That frame was a lot of money back then, but it has stood the test of time, so it was obviously a very good investment.

  7. This is unbelieveable.....I think the young woman is my husband's great grandmother, Mrs. Crookshank. We have a framed picture (actually is's a tinted postcard)on our dresser of the exact picture in your post. I've always wondered about this picture and love the story about your great grandmother. If you like, I can e-mail you a picture of the postcard, front and back.
