Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Comfort Incoming!!!

Hi, all!

Welcome to Can I Get A Whoop Whoop Friday!  For a change, I'm actually writing this on Friday instead of Thursday night - I forgot my husband and I had a work-related obligation last night, so I'm up early this morning.  Excuse me if I'm a little bleary-eyed!!  But I'm chugging caffeine, so all will be well shortly!  Are you ready to get your dancing shoes on? I know I am!  So let's get started!!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

If you follow me on Instagram (@fabricaddictquilts) you know that for the last two weeks or so I've been working on a pair of weighted blankets for a customer.  Many people on IG have been asking the purpose of weighted blankets, so I'll share a little info here that I found on the internet....

Traditionally, weighted blankets are used as part of occupational therapy for children experiencing sensory disorders, anxiety, stress or issues related to autism.  But even kids without such a diagnosis find important benefits.  The extra pressure on the body is helpful for kids of all kinds, but particularly for kids with autism and sensory processing disorder.  The added weight causes the brain to release neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine that improve moods and induce a calming effect.

A couple of years ago, at the request of a school teacher friend, I came up with a tutorial for a simple, inexpensive, weight-adjustable weighted blanket that she could make for her classroom.  I've also made these for my grandchildren (the deaf ones) and we've found that they help with some of the sensory issues they face, and improve their sleep.  However this was the first time I had made any as commission jobs.  I had to adjust the pattern for the larger twin size - and now I will need to add that info to the tutorial!

Everything started with this enormous pile of 90" wide muslin...

...which got cut into strips and sewn into this (note to self: press as you go, not after assembly!)...

...and ended up looking like this!

Here's another view of the weight pockets.

Then it was off to the chain sewing races, putting together 140 little bean bags for the weights.  It helps if you remember that for 140 beanies, you need 280 pieces of fabric!

Whew!  That's a lot of chain stitching!!!

Then it's time to stuff those babies!  My postal scale came in very handy, because each beanie was filled with 1.3 ounces of pellets for the lighter blanket, and 1.6 ounces of pellets for the heavier one.  I use a weighting pellet similar to what you would find in a Beanie Baby - made of a poly substance, so liquid doesn't affect it.

140 weights, all sewed shut and serged around for added strength.  Did you know that sergers are v-e-r-y s-l-o-w??????  That took a LONG time!

Then it was time to stuff all the little pockets on the blanket.  There are ten rows of seven pockets on the twin size blanket.

Next comes loading the blanket into the cover.  The blanket has loops sewn into the bottom, top and sides, and the cover has tie strings sewn into the seams at coordinating spots to secure the blanket in place.  It's rather like putting on a rather complicated pillowcase!

And in the end, two finished weighted blankets, ready to go to their new home!

For any who are interested, the tutorial for the crib size blanket can be found by clicking the Weighted Blanket Tutorial page tab under my blog header.  I probably won't get the twin size info on there for a couple of weeks, but if you need it, email me and I'll be glad to send you a pic of my notes!

And I learned a funny thing while working on these blankets - I really don't like the feel of fleece!  I actually found that handling fleece for any extended period of time (like folding, cutting, pinning, sewing, you know, all the important stuff!) totally sets my teeth on edge, like fingernails on a blackboard!  Who knew?

And one more fun thing to whoop about, even if it is a day late - Thursday was Cochlear Implant Day!  Having two grandchildren with cochlear implants, I can testify to what an amazing difference they make in the lives of people with hearing disabilities.  Hooray for cochlears!!!

Oh, and one more thing!  Remember this?

Well, on Savannah's Sweet 16 birthday, 2/23/16, my friend Robin filled up this truck.....

with large storage tubs filled with 17,212 pairs of socks and took them to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital!!!!!  (If you want to see a video of the many tubs she filled, check out her Facebook page, Savannah's Sweet 16 Sock Drive.)  Savannah is surely smiling down from heaven at the sight of all those happy feet at Vandy.  The socks are still rolling in, so I imagine that number will increase, but what a wonderful showing of support from the global community!  She received socks from all over the world, including Spain and Australia.  Many of them came from readers of this blog. You should be proud of yourselves!!
Good work!!

So - - - can I get a whoop whoop??

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

And now it's your turn!

What are you whooping about this week?

What's making you dance a little happy dance?

Share - we want to dance with you!
And it's always more fun to dance with friends!

The party will stay open until Sunday midnight.

Hope to see you there!

Hugs!

Make-A-List Monday - Happy Chinese New Year!!

Hi, all!

Happy Chinese New Year, and welcome to the Year of the Monkey - or as Emmy would say, welcome to the year of the "silly monkey" (one of her favorite phrases!)  It's always fun to have an excuse to eat Chinese food, and that's just how we celebrated yesterday - but I miss the dumplings we got in China!

OK, enough of that - let's see how last week's list went!

1.  Keep working on the secret gift quilt.
Done!  After making final fabric choices...

...and refining my block and making a working sample...

...today I managed to make some of the blocks for this quilt!  As this is a commission quilt that will be a gift, I'm covering over the images - but wanted you to see how cool it's looking!  There are photographs underneath those flowers...

2.  Bind six quilts for the quilt ministry.
Done!  I didn't get a pic of the six finished quilts, but I did take a picture of all of the quilts (including those six) waiting to be gifted that are on our shelves right now!

3.  Finish the fourth Nifty Nines quilt top.
Done!  I not only finished it, I liked it so much I used it for this past Sunday's tutorial!

4.  Write up an estimate for a t-shirt quilt for a friend.
Done!  Now it's just a waiting game to see what she wants to do.

5.  Start working on the fifth Nifty Nines quilt top.
Started!  The pieces are all cut, and I've actually started assembling the blocks.  I think this one is going to be a favorite of mine!

6.  Keep working on the My Small World Kits.
This one fell by the wayside this week, and I'm afraid is going to stay there until I get a few other things done!

7.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.
Only one quilt this week...

This quilt went to a woman with multiple health issues who is going into rehab this week.

So last week's list went pretty well, with the exception of the Small World quilts.  Fortunately I have a lot of time to work on those!  This week looks like it will be pretty busy - here's what I've got planned...

1.  Work on a new commission job - two weighted blankets.

2.  Keep working on the secret gift quilt.

3.  Keep working on the fifth Nifty Nines quilt top.

4.  Contact more potential sponsors for Hands2Help.

5.  Write the tutorial for the third Nifty Nines quilt.

6.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

So that's the plan!  Certainly more than enough to keep me out of trouble - especially if I can keep on track.  Tomorrow should be easy - we're supposed to get snow off and on all day, and bitter cold temps.  Fortunately, I don't have anywhere I have to go, so I'm going to put a pot of beans on the stove, bundle up in yoga pants and a nice warm sweater, and sew sew sew!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

I also want to update you on Savannah's Sweet 16 Sock Drive, which I posted about here.  As of Super Bowl Sunday, 6274 pairs of socks had been donated, and they're still rolling in every day!  Today Robin even posted a picture of a package that came today from Spain, and I know of at least one that will be coming from Australia!  If you've been thinking about sending some socks, I hope you will - I'd love to see that number top 10,000 pair of socks!  Wouldn't that be amazing?  All the info about the Sock Drive and where to send socks can be found here, or you can look for the Facebook page, Savannah's Sweet 16 Sock Drive.  It's fun to follow along on the page and see each day's package pile and new socks!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

So now, the question is - - - what are YOU working on this week?

Hugs!

Sarah

Make-A-List Monday - Where Did January Go??

Hi, all!

It's Monday again - and the first day of February!  Can you believe it?  January flew by in a flurry of strange weather, housekeeping and lots of quilting projects, at least for me.  I hope yours went well too!

Last week was a busy one, too - so let's see how the list went!

1.  Continue working on the special secret gift quilt.
This is an ongoing project, and unfortunately one I can't show off, but I can say that I have done a whole lot of preliminary work, including making a sample block so I know how it will go together.  I should be able to start sewing on this one in the next week!

2.  Continue working on the My Small World quilts.
Done!  I've completed all the hourglass blocks and pinwheel blocks for all three quilts, and I'm ready to move on to the next step.

3.  Start working on another quilt top for the Nifty Nines quilt along.
Done!  I finished this top...

...and started this one!

4.  Contact possible sponsors for Hands2Help, and finalize the charities.
Done!  The email has gone out to the first batch of potential sponsors, and you can read about this year's charities by clicking on  the Hands2Help tab under my blog header.  The schedule's there, too!

5.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.
Done!

This quilt went to a little boy with pancreatitis...

This one went to a young mom who suffered a stroke and then was diagnosed with ovarian cancer...

And this quilt is now comforting a woman whose father died very suddenly from prostate cancer.

Also, eight baby quilts and four adult quilts were donated to a local hospital's NICU and cancer wards (but unfortunately no pictures...)

I also quilted and bound this pretty little quilt, which will go into the stash of quilts ready to be gifted at church.

OK, so last week's list is finished, and I think finished well!  Here's what's on the horizon for this week...

1.  Keep working on the secret gift quilt.

2.  Bind these six quilts for the quilt ministry...

3.  Finish the fourth Nifty Nines quilt top.

4.  Write up an estimate for a t-shirt quilt for a friend.

5.  Start working on the fifth Nifty Nines quilt top.

6.  Keep working on the My Small World quilts.

7.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

I feel like it's just a repetition of the previous week, but at least for this month, that's probably what it's going to be like.  At least I don't have to think hard about what I've got to do!

So now the question is - - - what are YOU working on this week?

Hugs!

Sarah

PS  Just a reminder - there's still time to send socks for Savannah's Sweet 16 Sock Drive - they've already received over 3,000 socks, they're getting some national attention as part of the 29 Days of Giving Challenge, and I know there are collection boxes up in lots of places!  It is amazing to see how many lives this little girl touched during her time here on this earth, and how many more will be touched as a result of others giving in her memory.  You can read more about the Sock Drive by clicking here.

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Rockin' My Socks Off...

Hi, all!

It's finally Friday!  And you know what that means - it's time to get our whoop whoop on!!  I've been whooping a lot this week, and not just over quilt-y things - so let's get started!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

First of all, you may have seen last Sunday's post, about Savannah's Sweet 16 Sock Drive...

I am so excited to say that the response has been UNBELIEVABLE!  Take a look at these pictures from just two days of shipments received....

...which resulted in a total of 1276 pairs of socks in TWO DAYS!!  She has another huge stack of packages she's sorting through right now, and I know there are still many people who haven't sent their donations yet (like me!)  Only five days into the drive, and it doesn't end until February 22nd!  If you'd like to become part of this fabulous story, please check out this blogpost for the full skinny.

Then, on the quilt-y front, I quilted and bound this sweet child's quilt for the quilt ministry...

...pieced a really nice men's top that will be part of the upcoming Nifty Nines Quilt-Along...

...pulled this beautiful batik top together in about two and a half hours the other day...

...and started piecing blocks for not one, not two, but three My Small World quilts!  In a moment of absolute lunacy, I decided it might be fun to make one for each grandchild.  Oh well, at least I've got until Christmas - nothing like starting early!

So that's what I'm whooping about this week!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

And now it's your turn!

What's got you whooping it up this week?

What's making you dance the happy dance?

Share - we want to dance along with you -

And it's always more fun to dance with friends!

The party will stay open until Sunday midnight -

Hope to see you there!

Hugs!

Sarah

Make-A-List Monday - Second Verse, Same As The First...

Hi, all!

Are you still snowed in?  I hope those of you who got snow this past weekend stayed safe, warm, and got to SEW!!  I certainly did - we received about eight inches of snow on Friday that kept us in most of the weekend.  I know that doesn't sound like a lot to some of you, but in Middle Tennessee, it was a record one-day snowfall.  We're just not equipped to deal with that much snow!

Well, since I did get to sew, let's see how last week's list went...

1.  Work on a special secret quilt project.
I did make some headway on this one, and hope to start sewing a little later this week.

2.  Finish at least one of the Nifty Nines quilt along quilt tops.
Done!  And not just one, but two quilt tops are finished!  You've already seen the first, but here's a sneak peek at the second...

3.  Start piecing blocks for three My Small World quilts (these will become the annual quilt for the grandkids this year!)
Started!  I made the hourglass blocks and the large pinwheels for all three quilts.  I plan on working on these quilts a little bit each week so it will go slowly for a while...

4.  Contact possible sponsors for Hands2Help.  (If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, drop me an email at salliesue57 (at) gmail (dot) com!)
I did not get to this one.  I really want to take time to do this properly, and I got so caught up in sewing I completely forgot this was on the list.

5.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.
Done!  Three quilts this week...

This quilt was given to a little 9 week old girl with Kawasaki syndrome, a heart condition...

This one went to an eight-month old boy with pneumonia...

And this one was given to a man just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a month or so to live.

I also wrote up an estimate for a commission job, which involved altering the size of the requested quilt and re-figuring the fabric requirements (an all-afternoon job that strained my math brain!)

So that was last week!  Not too bad, but I've got to get to work on the H2H stuff.  So let's see what's on tap for this week...

1.  Continue working on the special secret gift quilt.

2.  Continue working on the My Small World quilts.

3.  Start working on another quilt top for the Nifty Nines quilt along.

4.  Contact possible sponsors for Hands2Help, and finalize the charities.

5. Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

Looks a lot like last week's list, doesn't it?  The first two will be ongoing projects for a while, and Hands2Help has next priority.  Hopefully I'll get to work some other things in, though - quilting some ministry tops, for example!

And if you missed last night's post, I hope you'll check it out...

I've been blown away by the fabulous response already to my post - but it's only a drop in the bucket compared to the response that my friend Robin has received already to her initial request!  You can read about it here - and I hope you'll join me in showering Vanderbilt Children's Hospital with socks for their young patients!  Here's what I picked up today for the drive...

I may have gone a little overboard - but it's such a good cause!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

And now the question is - - - what are YOU working on this week?

Hugs!

Sarah
