Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Lots of Quilting Going On!

 

Hi, all!

Another week has come and gone, and it's Friday once again - and you know what that means!  It's time for us to get our whoop whoop on!  Are you ready?  Let's get started!

I did a good bit of sewing and quilting this week!  It felt really good to get back into the swing of things a bit, although I will admit to a bit of "paralysis of analysis" as I tried to figure out how to quilt a customer quilt.  When I mentioned this to my husband, he said, "Use thread."  How helpful!  But after that, I really buckled down and figured it out.

This is the design I ended up using - lots of curliecue flowers and swirls!

And the binding is all done, too!  I can't show you more because it's a customer quilt, but it's awfully pretty!

Then on Wednesday afternoon I decided to make a new quilt.  I had a free pattern I wanted to try, so I grabbed some of my Kate Spain fat quarters and that white linen I found when cleaning up, and got to cutting!

Thursday was dedicated to assembling the quilt top, and I'm pleased to say it's all finished!

I've still got to find a piece of fabric to back it with - I diligently searched through my stash, but didn't find anything that really worked with it.  Oh well, guess I've got to head to the fabric store tomorrow!

And as you can see, my assistant took her job very seriously!

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Hygge Sparkle Pop Finished (And Explained!)

Hi, all!

Guess what?  Friday has rolled around once again, and you know what that means - it's time for us to get our whoop whoop on!  I hope these beautiful spring days have inspired you to be creative - I can't wait to see what everyone is working on!  So let's get started!

Last week I showed you my linen quilt top...

Well, yesterday I loaded it up on the quilt frame and finished it up!

I had so much fun quilting this!  I thought about doing a geometric pattern, but in the end, preferred to just "doodle" all over it!  

It's a long way across the quilt when you are doodling - takes a good bit of time!  Fortunately, I had a day with no other obligations, so I just parked myself at the frame and quilted for six hours!

This picture not only shows the quilting, but also shows the colors really well.

I was so excited to take it off the frame, I jumped right into the binding so it would be FINISHED!

And here it is, in all its glory - Hygge Sparkle Pop!

Now let me explain about the name.  I gave you the definition of 'hygge' last week - and some of the fabrics have metallic threads woven in them (which do not photograph well), hence the 'sparkle'. The 'pop' comes from how I felt the day I started working on this quilt - my first day of yoga in several weeks, and lots of my joints were going 'pop'!  My husband said I sounded like Rice Krispies (you know, snap-crackle-pop?) and that got stuck in my head. Plus it has some pretty pops of red in among the softer colors.   Hence the name Hygge Sparkle Pop!

For once, it was not too windy....

...and the light outside was perfect!

It had just finished raining a little bit before I took these pictures, and it was still just a little overcast, but brightening nicely.

It was just the right amount of light to show off the quilting.  Hooray!

Hygge Sparkle Pop

Created from a fat quarter bundle of Essex yarn-dyed linen, 20 fat quarters in the light color way.

A postage-stamp quilt made with 2" finished squares, finishing at approximately 60" x 70".

Hobbs Tuscan washable wool batting.

Graffiti (wild) quilting, as taught by Christina Cameli of A Few Scraps.

I May Have A Scrap Problem... Progress and Inspiration!

Hi, all!

Scraps just keep multiplying, don't they?  But I am making some progress - I got all my solid squares cut for QuiltCon (next week - hooray!!) and yesterday I put my scrappy string quilt on the frame!

I experimented with a new quilting design - sort of like a freeform freehand Baptist Fan.  It used a lot of bobbin thread, but it was fun to do and I think it's going to look wonderful when it's washed and dried! Binding will be done today - it's the first sunny day we've had in a week and the last one for about ten days and I've got to take pictures while I can!

I haven't had much time to do anything else scrappy this week, although I do have some ideas rolling around my head - like a mini version of my Supernova quilt, made with the green bonus HSTs left over from Nathanael's annual quilt.  And maybe some of these cool pouches...

Aren't these neat?  It's the wide-open zipper pouch tutorial by Noodlehead, and I have a ton of 2.5" squares that would be perfect for this!  And it seems to me I have a box of zippers somewhere, too.

How about some great inspiration?  Joan has been making a lot of scrappy quilts lately, and here's her latest...

Such a simple design, but a GREAT scrap buster!  I love all the colors in this one.  It makes me smile!

And Moira has been using orphan blocks to make these adorable snail blocks!  We've got tons of orphan blocks at church - I may need to check and see if any of them would work for this...

Have you tried a garlic knot block yet?  I haven't, but it's definitely on my list.  Paired with the sashing, cornerstones, and that great piano key border, this quilt just sings!  And it eats up a lot of scraps, too!

And last, but certainly not least, how about this quick quilt?  It would be so simple to make using 10" squares - a size I've been cutting this year, both here and at church.  This quilt is definitely on my list to make ASAP!

Keep plugging away at those scraps - and remember, they make great comfort quilts, too!  It's a great way to reduce the scrap level and help others too.

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Under The Sea...

Hi, all!

The days have flown by so fast, and it's finally Friday again!  And that means it's time to get our whoop whoop on - are you ready?  Let's get started!

Welcome to springtime in Tennessee!

Where if it's not raining, it's so windy you can only get horizontal pictures of quilts on the line...

But out of the fifty or so pics I took, I did manage to get a few that showed most of the quilt.  This quilt has a very funny story behind it....

Remember the pillowcase dresses?  I took one with me when I went to pick up Emmy (who's nearly six) along with some fabric I had bought to make a dress for her.  I showed her the pillowcase dress, which of course she loved, and told her I could make her one with the fabric I brought.

As you can see, there are mermaids all over this fabric, and it immediately reminded me of her.  She looked at me and said, "No, Nana, it can't be a dress!"  I asked her why not, and she insisted that it was a "bwanket" - the word quilt is very hard for her to hear properly, so she doesn't try to say it very often - so I gave up on making a dress out of it.

Then I saw this beautiful quilting by Christina Cameli of A Few Scraps on Instagram...

And I knew what I would do with that fabric!  This quilting design looks so much like water to me, the perfect accompaniment to those lovely swimming mermaids!

All that wavy quilting is really hard on the body - I was totally whupped by the end of the quilt - but so worth it!  

The front of the quilt is whole cloth - just one piece of yardage - but I pieced the back from several pieces I had on hand.  

Two of the pieces were a bronze-y gold on white, and the other was a floral print from Joel Dewberry's Modernist line. The binding is another print from Modernist.

We'll be celebrating Emmy's sixth birthday on Easter Sunday, and I hope she'll like her "bwanket"!!

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? A Bit of Fancy Quilting...

Hi, all!

It's Friday again!  Did you see the harvest moon last night? It was spectacular!   Always a sign that fall is finally here.  Have you been doing much sewing this week?  I bet you've got something to whoop about - so let's get our whoop whoop on!!
