Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Another Big Project...

Hi, all!

Wow, here we are again - Friday has rolled around and it's time for us to get our whoop whoop on!!  Are you ready?  Let's get started!

This year, our quilt ministry (Piece*Love*Quilt) decided that they wanted to make quilts for our graduating seniors.  We started many months ago getting our tops made, and we've spent the last few weeks quilting and binding those tops.  Today I took care of the last step - taking pictures of those quilts!  I'm ready to share them with you now...

Twenty-five quilts for our graduating seniors - a fun project and one we will probably continue! Most of these quilts are about twin sized. Some are made from tops donated by some of you.  Others are scrappy tops using some truly interesting fabrics - like the very bright quilt in the center of the first picture.  The fabrics in that quilt came from a box of fabric cut-outs - the leftovers after garment pieces were cut out of fabric for mass production.  I think they probably date from the early 1970s.  

So my whoop whoop for the week isn't mine alone - it's a big group effort with lots of people participating.

Make-A-List Monday - Put On Your Pearls, Girls!

Hi, all!

Happy Monday!!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day, full of fun and family.  I celebrated all weekend, spending Saturday with my daughter and her family and then traveling to Kentucky to watch my niece graduate from Berea College.  It was a great weekend, all around!

But now it's time to get back to the real world - so let's see how last week's list went...

1.  Photograph the quilts for the special project and prep them for delivery.

Done!  You can read all about it here, but just because it's pretty, here's a picture...

2.  Choose my goal for May's scrap challenge.

Done!  I decided this month to continue working on using up the scraps in the blue tub, which is way out of control!  I'm hoping to make at least one more quilt from it, plus some string blocks, and cut some more 2.5." x 5.5" blocks to join the green ones from March.  I may make a quilt like this one - I'm still deciding...

3.  Work on a quilt for a friend who is collecting auction items to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Done!  I finished this quilt on Saturday and delivered it to him this morning - I hope it raises a whole lot of money for St. Jude's!

4.  Deal with the scraps created by the flurry of finishes I've had in the last few weeks - press and put into the correct color tubs, or cut up into useful sizes!  Do. it. now!

Done!  Or at least, a large part of them.  Here's where I started...

That took the better part of an afternoon to achieve - it's a slow process, but hopefully it will be worth it in the end!!

5. Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

It was a quiet week - no quilt requests came in.  I'm sure that won't last, though!

So all in all, a good week for quilt-y things.  I managed to get everything done that I needed to do, and that's always a plus!  Here's what I hope to do this week...

1.  Work on a scrap quilt from the blue tub.

2.  Quilt a top for a Hands2Help participant.

3.  Cut out a dress by the Lady Skater dress pattern.

4.  Make a journal cover as part of the book review blogpost for this coming Friday.

5.  Start working on a set of these for my grandkids!  I figure they'll be great scrap-busters... and help them learn their letters!

6.  Start on a skirt for Lilli and a dress for Emmy, both made from Shopkins fabric (their current favorite vice!)

7.  Keep up with any quilt ministry needs that come up.

Definitely more than enough to keep me out of trouble!  And I'm fairly sure I'm forgetting something important - so when I remember that, it will be added to the list!

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? My Big Project!

It's Friday again, and we all know what that means - - - it's time to get our whoop whoop on!  I hope you're ready - and remember, it doesn't have to be a finish.  It can be a work in progress, or just started - whatever you're happy about this week!  So come join in the fun!!  Let's get started!

Many of you may know that I've been working on a bunch of quilts for a special project over the past few months - I've been posting pics on Instagram, and it's shown up in my weekly to-do lists.  Well, today is the day that I've been working towards for about six months now - the day those quilts are delivered to their eventual home!  

You see, five years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and started a long relationship with my doctor's office.  I had a great doctor!  Each time I saw him, he would check me out, talk to me for a while, then tell me I was doing a great job and give me a big hug.  He was one of the nicest people I ever knew.  My friend, who went to all of my chemo treatments with me, was a patient of his many years before.  She was going through her treatments all alone, and when he realized she didn't have anyone coming with her, he brought a sugar glider and popped it into her shirt pocket to keep her company!  

Unfortunately, about a year and a half ago, a drunk driver ran a red light and my doctor's car was hit, killing him instantly.  Such a loss!  This man was so well known and so greatly loved that they actually held his funeral in Nashville's symphony hall so that everyone who wanted to could come.  When his medical practice's offices were recently renovated, the infusion center (where chemo is administered) was completely redone and christened "The Eric Raefsky Infusion Center".  When I saw that on my last visit there, I realized what I wanted to do as a memorial to him and in thanks to all of the great staff in that office.  And my big project was born....

Eighteen quilts, one for each of the chairs in the new infusion center!  You'll probably recognize most of these quilts, made over the last six months or so...

There's a modern scrappy quilt and an orphan block quilt made with beautifully appliquéd blocks...

...a quilt made from a super-easy pattern and another made in preparation for a book review....

...a quilt made from fabric received from a lovely blogger friend, and another one made from binding scraps...

...bow ties in a modern layout and a modern take on nine-patch blocks...

...two quilts, both a riot of colors but so very different in composition...

...appliqued orange peels and another nine-patch arrangement...

...more orphan blocks, a batik quilt, and a lovely bright purple and green quilt...

...and a manly version of a giant granny square block!

Each quilt bears this label, too...

It was so much fun to make all of these, knowing that they will be bringing comfort to folks at a time when they really need it!

 But it was also a lot of fun to hang all these quilts up in my yard and see them all displayed in one place!

I'll be delivering all these quilts this morning as I go to see the doctor for my five-year check-up.  With any luck, I'll go to annual visits after this one!  Woohoo!!
