I May Have A Scrap Problem.... Some New Things!!

Hi, all!

Oh, I was a bad girl this week - - - but considering the things I picked up will help me deal with my overwhelming supply of scraps, I'm going to use that as my justification!  I got some seriously happy mail on Monday, and I want to share a little bit about those in a minute.  But first, the progress on my Long Time Gone quilt...

I did end up remaking one of the blocks I had made previously, and I like it much better now!  Below you can see all the blocks I've made so far, together - I'm really liking the way this is coming together!

I tried to place the blocks in their approximate position in the finished quilt, so the big gaps are where future blocks and filler pieces will go.

Now on to my happy mail.  Look what showed up in my mail this week!!!

Now I will freely admit to being a huge fan of Amanda Jean Nyberg.  Her blog was one of the first ones I found as a newbie quilter, and her simple yet creative designs helped me realize that yes, I really could do this!  So when I found out she had a new book coming out, I was really excited (can you tell?) and ordered it right away!  Once I started flipping through the book, I knew it would become a staple on my shelf.  First of all, there's a section just for me...

...and oh, wait, another section just for me.....

There are great quilt and project ideas (11 quilts, four pincushions, and cards) separated out by section...

I've got LOTS of squares...

...scads of strings...

...and tons of triangles!

I've even got plenty of snippets, much to the consternation of those who cut up scraps with me - I have a hard time throwing any piece of fabric away!!

I can't wait to get into the meat of this book and read more in depth what Amanda Jean has to teach me about scraps.  Plus the quilts are so-o-o-o-o-o gorgeous - I want to make them all!!

And then, speaking of quilts I want to make - - - I'm having so much fun with the Long Time Gone quilt (by Jen Kingwell) I went ahead and ordered her pattern for Gypsy Wife!  After all, a girl's gotta have a plan, right?  I figure I'll just jump right into making this one after I finish Long Time Gone, making one set of blocks each week.  Take that, scraps!!!

So that's what I've been doing with scraps this week.  How's that scrap monster of yours doing?  Is he getting a little tamer these days?

Feel free to link up below and share your own scrappy sewing!

Hugs!

Sarah

  2. I want to get Amanda Jeans book, just haven't gotten it done yet. A friend gave me the Gypsy Wife book but haven't time to make a start, maybe in the winter? I look forward to seeing the new projects to come. Have a great day!

  3. Throw away scraps? Unheard of in my house.. there are always little pincushions to make up as future gifts.. and Amanda Jean's pincushions got me into those..plus hunting and finally finding an old wooden bowl... like hers..to hold them... a sweet combo.

  4. Oh, you're going to do Gypsy Wife. I've had that on my bucket list for awhile! I'm really liking Long Time Gone as I'm watching you put it together. I want your scraps, though; mine are pretty dull and boring. Haha. I have Amanda Jean's book too, and can't wait to make one of the quilts. My bucket list is getting longer!

  5. Your Long Time Gone is looking so beautiful, I can see why Gypsy Wife would need to follow :-)
No Scraps Left Behind looks pretty interesting. I'm going to look for that. Thanks for sharing about it!

  6. How do I manage my scraps? Most of the time I just get them toss into a storage bin instead of them laying around in piles. Mine are not sorted in way shape or form. I keep telling myself that one of these days I will dedicated most of one whole year to making quilts just with scraps to see if I can make at least a dent in them.

  7. I have the Gypsy Wife booklet, I even started making some of the blocks last year, and that's where it stopped, I really need to get back to it. There is a Facebook page which is excellent for those in need of support, I just need a kick. Looking forward to seeing you start that one.

  8. I think the book will have to find a place on mu=y shelf, will check it out at the quilt how in august, mind you might not be able to wait that long! Long time gone is coming along beautifully and the new gypsy wife project looks very interesting though also very complicated

  9. I got mine on Monday as well. I think "Sunday Morning Quilts" has been the most useful book I have. I don't know how many times I have referred to it until I finally discovered the best solution for my scrap organization. I am also excited to savor her new book "No Scrap Left Behind". I am sure I will be gleaning from it for a long time.

Like you, I just can't throw anything away. I recently picked up two quart size baggies with tiny rectangle in them and considered the weight of those bags and wondered what they would cost if I bought the fabric by the pound? So that's why I have a scrap problem. I enjoy your posts and like to see what you do with yours.
