Artisan Blog Tour, Day 2 - Moroccan Tiles, Bonus Pillows, and a Giveaway!

Hi, all!

Welcome to the second day of my turn on the Artisan blog tour!  Artisan is a new line of fabrics coming out in November by the fabulous Kaffe Fassett for Free Spirit Fabrics.  As I said yesterday, I had so much fun with this beautiful pile of fabric...

...that I couldn't cram it all into one blogpost!  So today I'm going to share a few more things I created incorporating the second color way in this beautiful line of quilting cottons, batiks and ikats from Kaffe Fassett and Free Spirit Fabrics!  Just so you can see all of the fabrics in the Blue color way, here's a wonderful shot from the Artisan brochure...

Such gorgeous, rich colors!  Quilting cottons on the left, batiks in the center, and ikats on the right.  They play wonderfully with the Sunny color way, too, as I'll show you in just a minute.

When I was asked to help with the launch of Artisan back in July, my mind was whirling with possibilities - especially because they put very few restrictions on what we could do!  And of course, my mind always goes to quilts....

...and with the strong bohemian vibe of these fabrics, I keep envisioning the beautiful ceramic tiles of Morocco.  I paired quilting cottons and batiks in both the Sunny color way and the Blue color way with some vibrant tangerine Kona cotton to create this vivid quilt.

It's a smaller lap size - 48" x 60" - and I've written a tutorial if you are interested.  Just request it in a comment below and I'll send you a PDF version.

In the making of this quilt, I also created some bonus HSTs which I used to make the pillow shown above.  Don't you just love bonus HSTs?   I still have a mess of them - I see more pillows in my future!

Here's a closer shot of the pillow - I embellished it with large stitch quilting in a variegated perle cotton and did a knife edge binding around the edge to continue the look of the small borders.

But wait - - - that's not all!  I had scraps left over from the table cover, too, so I put them together in another pillow cover...

I'm really fond of this one - I love the wild variety of fabrics it contains, and I did large stitch embellishment on this one, too, varying the distance between the vertical lines of stitching for a random feel.  This pillow make me smile!

Looks like a cozy little place to set a spell, doesn't it?  This was taken by the side of an old smokehouse on our property - it is my first time to use it as a photo shoot location, but I don't think it will be the last!  It makes a great backdrop for quilts!

I hope you've hung in there this long - because now it's time for the giveaway part of our program!  Remember this pretty stack?

Your comment today will put you in the running for one of those lovely jelly rolls of Kaffe Fassett's shot cottons!  And because it's my birthday, I'm going to sweeten the pot for a second winner... do you see the mat underneath my sewing machine in the background?

Here's what the other side looks like.  Inspired by Lillyella Stitchery's Undercover Maker Mat, I made this using some Artisan fabrics combined with some other Kaffe Fassett prints I had hoarded stashed away.  Look how nicely they play together!!!  I'll be sending this to a second winner chosen from today's comments (without all my tools - sorry!! I need those!)

So how do you enter?  It's easy!  Just leave a comment below, and in it, tell us your favorite birthday surprise!

I'll start it off - one year, based on a random comment from me, my husband gave me a Suzuki Samurai that our local bank had repo'd.  Total surprise!  When I asked him why, he said, "Because you said it was cute!"  It replaced our broken down and ancient Plymouth Fury, so it was a welcome gift - and a totally romantic one!

Please please please leave your email address in your comment, particularly if you want a copy of the tutorial!  So many people are no-reply bloggers these days, mostly through no fault of their own - I think there's a conspiracy going on out there! And if you don't feel comfortable putting your email address out in public, feel free to email me at salliesue57 (at) gmail (dot) com to let me know.

And remember - there's another giveaway tomorrow, and still time to enter yesterday's giveaway!  It's just a big birthday giveaway weekend around here!!  Entries will remain open for all three giveaways until noon CST Thursday, November 3rd, and I'll announce all the winners in my whoop whoop post next Friday, November 4th.

Tomorrow I'll be sharing a couple of bags I made using these wonderful fabrics - hope to see you then!!

Hugs!

Sarah

  2. Happy Birthday! I hope you receive a great surprise this year, too. Thanks for offering the fabric and mat. They are beautiful.

I think the biggest birthday surprise was a party when I turned 8.

  6. Hi Sarah, Happy birthday, and so generous to think of this wonderful giveaway. I love Kaffe Fassett. All his fabrics make me smile. As for a birthday surprise, well, last year, when I was 70, my husband took me to our local pub for lunch and when we got there all our friends had gathered to give me a surprise party. It was particularly sweet, since the last time I had a birthday party was when I was 5. I'll be 71 on Nov 7th, so I would love another surprise then (Kaffe's fabrics, perhaps? <BG?) Blessings

  10. My favorite birthday surprise? I think it was this year! I had gotten a nice new phone and dropped it and broke the screen, so I went back to the old one. But, I was given a brand new Moto G4 Plus as an early birthday present - with a protective case so if I drop it, the phone won't break!

  11. My favorite birthday surprise was the year my husband, along with my four then young daughters, bought me my current sewing machine.

I had been using the one from the wards catalog I bought with my baby sitting money when I was 11, but it had started leaking oil everywhere! I was a little distraught, but I limped along on that old machine because I knew we had no money to spend on a new one.

So my birthday comes around, and my husband and four little giggling girls presented me with this huge wrapped box. Inside was an Elna 6003 quilter's dream! My first question was how did he know to choose this machine? Second how can we afford this??! He had seen a quilting magazine open to an Eleanor Burns ad for the machine (I was only marking my place!) And he charged it to our newly fully paid off credit card (all of a few short weeks!)

How could I say anything to those excited faces! So we scraped another year to pay it off, and I have sewed and quilted, mended and created all the years since :) sdelar(at)frontiernet(dot)net

  17. Birthdays in my family are quiet affairs without a lot of celebration, but several years ago, all of my grown siblings gathered at my mom's house a few days before my birthday, called me to come down, and surprised me with a cake. It was awesome to see them all, and I was very surprised! Happy birthday to you! Love your blog--it is so colorful and bright. Always look forward to the "whoop whoops".

  20. Thanks for the chance to win the jelly roll of Kaffe Fassett's shot cottons! My favorite birthday surprise was when my school friends threw me a sweet 16 party. I turned 16 in 1981. They gave me a charm pendant that just started being popular back then. A few of my closest friends went together and bought the necklace. Then each one of them bought a personalized charm. What a beautiful memory. I still have it. It's a treasure. Have a great weekend, Sarah! LOVE the pillows!!!

My favourite BD surprise was shopping for a new vehicle and when we (DH and I) went inside to sign the papers, DH said "put it to her name. I want her to be able to borrow too so she needs a build credibility." I thought that was so sweet. (Yes, he did still pay for it. :^D) My most romantic gift is any day that I come home and there's candles alighted on the table and diner is ready! Enjoy your day! ;^)

I'm not very big on surprises, so tend to be explicit about what I'd like to receive or do for my birthday. So I was pretty pleased when one year my husband did surprise me with a gift card to my favorite local spa and a basket of goodies to go along with it. Totally picked out by him, as I think that year I was adamant about wanting/needing a toaster oven. :)

  99. I'm a zebra fanatic, and my biggest birthday surprise was when my husband gave me a statue for the lawn of a zebra, the size of a live zebra foal! At the last minute, he had to be away that year for my birthday, and when he called me to tell me about it and apologize, I told him it would be ok if he gave me a life sized zebra, just for fun, of course, and never expecting to get one! In fact, my husband thinks I have way more zebras than I need already, so I didn't expect him to ever buy me any zebras. So he really surprised me when he got me this amazing statue, by far the largest of all my zebras! He ordered it on line, so it arrived via FedEx when he wasn't even here!

  100. Here's wishing you a great birthday! My story is not my favorite birthday surprise but it is one of my most memorable. I was 7 months pregnant with our third child when my husband phoned me in the morning of my birthday to tell me that a couple was coming by to look at our house that evening. We had been trying to sell our house ourselves for several months. So I rushed through the day cleaning, scrubbing and even ironing to make my house sparkle and shine. At the appointed time of 6 pm, I opened the door to discover my mom, dad, and all my 4 siblings on my doorstep wishing me a "Surprise! Happy Birthday." There was my husband behind them holding pizzas for supper for everyone. This was his idea of throwing me a surprise party. I was not amused and was too tired to enjoy it. Let's just say he's never thrown me another surprise party.

  106. Happy Birthday! I hope the happiness you share all through the year comes back to you on your birthday, Sarah.

My biggest birthday surprise was the year I received a marriage proposal. I didn't end up marrying that sweet boy, but at the time I thought I was going to, so that made it a lovely and memorable birthday. (I was still in high school, so it was all very romantic...)

I would very much appreciate a copy of your Moroccan Tiles quilt. My dad was stationed in Morocco in WW2, so that gives it extra meaning to me.

  111. Happy Birthday! I hope you do like I do and celebrate for days--my record so far is 30 days, and I try to beat it every year. One of my favorite birthday surprises was seeing a young man holding a flower bouquet walking toward the front door of my California workplace, and then realizing it was my younger son, who was in college then in Boston--I had NO idea he was coming for a visit. But my all my colleagues knew, so I was shooed out of work early to enjoy his company. Later that night he had me close my eyes and gave me a hint of my "real" gift--a light bulb with a tiny basket hanging below it, and two tiny stick people inside the basket. He had reserved two spaces on a hot air balloon ride the next morning--150 miles away! He knew that was one thing I really wanted to try, so he made it happen. Love that kid; obviously his mother raised him right!

  112. One year I had mentioned I would like to go see a Patsy Cline show in downtown Baltimore (when we lived in Md) and then forgot about it. My husband made up some elaborate story about going out to dinner with his boss in Baltimore and once we got to the restaurant he spilled the beans that we weren't dining with his boss but after dinner he was taking me to the show!! It was so sweet!!

We showed up at the chosen restaurant for dinner out and there they all were! Then we went to one couples home for yummy desserts and actual presents. It filled my heart with joy especially since my 61years young mother had suddenly died of a heart attack on my 44th birthday.

I had two special birthday surprises - when I turned 50, my hubby and kids threw a surprise party for me! I had NO idea that anything was up... They even invited a very special friend, who drove about 2.5 hours to come to the party! Then, 2 years ago, my best birthday surprise ever was the announcement that I was going to be a grandmother! What a blessing! My grandson will be 2 in January, and we'll be "getting" another grandson in time for Christmas!
