12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop and Quiltalong, Day 2!

Hi, all!

Welcome to Day 2 of this year's 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop and Quiltalong!  I know you found some serious inspiration on Joy's blog yesterday - but there's still lots more to come!  Today Moira of The Quilted Snail will be bringing us a word, and I can't wait to hear it.  AND we've got the next step-in this year's quilt-along....

Doesn't that just put you in the Christmas spirit right off the bat?  It's never too late to start, and if you can't keep up with the daily sewing, the tutorials will still be here when you have time to catch up.

And here's the schedule for the rest of the hop...

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

And now for Day 2 of the quilt along!  Today we will be cutting the light green and white fabric pieces.

Take the light green fabric and cut:

 Five    3.5” x WOF strips

Make two stacks - one of three strips and one of two, carefully aligning the long edges.  Lay one stack above the other on your cutting mat, with the stack of three above the stack of two.  Cut off the selvages, then crosscut the strips in to 52 3.5” squares.  Mark these squares as Block 2: D.

Now take your white fabric and cut:

Two     7.5” x WOF strips

Crosscut into six 7.5” squares.  Cut diagonally twice. Label the resulting 24 triangles as Block 1: D.

NOTE:  You can use the two remaining pieces of 7.5” x WOF - mine measured 7.5” x 28” and 7.5” x 13” - to cut the 2” and 2.5” squares that are needed if you want.  Set those pieces aside for later use if you do.

Now cut:

Four 4.5” x WOF strips

Stack in pairs and crosscut 32 4.5” squares.  Set remainder of 4.5” strips aside for later use.  Separate the squares into one pile of 6 and one pile of 26.  Cut the squares twice on the diagonal.  Add the 24 triangle pieces to your stack of Block 1: B pieces, and the remainder (104 triangles) to your stack of Block 2: B pieces.

Now cut:

One     4” x WOF strip

Crosscut into 10 4” squares.  Take two of the 4.5” remainder strips from the previous step, press out the fold, trim the strip to 4” and crosscut two more 4” squares for a total of 12 4” squares. Cut these squares once on the diagonal.  Add to the pile of Block 1: C pieces.

Now cut:

Two     3.5” x WOF strips

Stack and crosscut into 24 3.5” squares.  Take the last two 4.5” remainder strips, press them open, trim to 3.5” wide, and crosscut two more 3.5” squares for a total of 26.  Add to the stack of Block 2: A pieces.

Now cut:

One     3” x WOF strip

Crosscut 13 3” squares.  Cut twice on the diagonal, then add to the stack of Block 2: E pieces.

NOTE:  At this point you can either follow the directions below or go back to your remaining 7.5” wide pieces to cut the necessary pieces.

Now cut:

Two     2.5” x WOF strips

Stack the strips and crosscut 26 2.5” squares.  Cut once diagonally, then label Block 2: F.  Save the remainder of the strips for the next step.

Now cut:

One     2” x WOF strip

Crosscut 20 2” squares.  Take the remainders of the 2.5” strips from the previous step and trim to 2”, then cut 4 more 2” squares for a total of 24.  Add to the stack of Block 1: A pieces.

And now you are finished cutting!  Tomorrow we start assembling the blocks - woohoo!

PS for those who noticed I forgot to list the finished size - this quilt will finish out at about 60" square.

Hugs!

Sarah
