I May Have A Scrap Problem... Something A Little Different!

Hi, all!

It's 2020, and I still have a scrap problem - how about you?  I haven't had much time this week to sew, or even check out the internet much, but I did come across a great new way to use scraps today.  And after all, everyone needs a new way to use up their scraps, right?

This was the first thing I saw - and as I have a pair of lampshades just like that, and I really don't like them, I immediately saw the potential!  Now, Pinterest is an amazing place, and when I started searching there, I found lots more great ideas!

Look at this adorable table!  I've had tables in the past that looked like this, and they get old and beat up so easy.  But this would be fun to do!

And how about a pretty stool or chair?  Both of these make me want to run to the flea market and see what nasty looking thing I can find to recover with fabric and make beautiful!!

And here's the magic thing you'll need to redecorate your furniture with fabric...

Mod Podge was so popular when I was a teenager - we used paper to decoupage literally everything!  I'm kind of excited to give this a try sometime this year - maybe as  part of decorating my new quilt studio after we move!

Have you ever decoupaged furniture using fabric?  I'd love to hear about your experience!

Hugs!

Sarah

  1. I have a chair in my classroom that the kids have been telling me needs to be repainted for years (they are right but it doesn’t stop them from using it every chance they get) maybe I should do this!

  2. Not furniture, but I did decoupage some plaster figurines with fabric some time ago. I like both the lamp and the stool, great idea for a scrap project!!

  3. I used plenty of Mod Podge in my day but yes, this idea of covering old furniture is really cool and might just find its way into my home!

  4. I have not tried much Modge Podge, but I saw a mailbox at a booth at the spring Paducah show last year. I really want to try it, but wonder if it would last being out in the weather.

  5. Sarah, you really shouldn't be doing this - giving me more ideas and more reasons to save up every little scrap :-) Love the lamp and I happen to have one I don't like a whole lot! Thanks for sharing.

  6. I did plastic swans years ago when Mod Podge was popular. To protect the project, I did put on a couple coats of Varethane to protect the fabrics and it was easier to dust as well. Have fun!

  7. I almost did this to my lamp shade but it was a Harley Davidson lamp - so I just couldn't.

  9. Years ago, my boys were small and we had moved into our new home. I made curtains for their bedroom, and used Elmer's white glue to cover a dresser that was left from the curtain fabric. It worked just as well as Mod Podge. The dresser was a hand me down that I had painted with my first baby, their only sister. I had to sand it before starting the project.

  10. I've Mod Podge about every thing back when but never with fabric. I do remember a time when all cribs had decals of cute animals. Maybe this trend will be revived with cute fabric fussy cuts in 2020. Time will tell. ;^)

  11. I recently let my granddaughter use my scraps to mod podge a cardboard from a bolt of fabric. I didn't know they made it for furniture. I guess it holds up better. Makes me want to go to thrift store for lamp shades!

  12. I love this idea!! I'm gonna keep this in mind for furniture. Not sure about the lampshade, although it is pretty. I just wonder would the glue melt from a lightbulb being on.

  13. These are all such beautiful scrappy ideas. I think if I brought modge podge into the house, my daughter would claim it to make slime.

  14. There is a YouTube channel featuring Kelly Barlow. Her business is Stinkin Cute and she does DIY's using mostly dollar and store and walmart items. She uses ModPodge on fabric and wood all the time. Check out her channel!

  15. I've been planning on doing this to an old sewing machine case. One of these days I'll get around to doing it.

  16. I LOVE your creations. I have definitely ModPodged fabric onto furniture. I have a thing for for fabric, new and old and vintage sheets. I have a Facebook and Instagram page to share my addiction, it's Cate's Closet & Clutter, if you'd like to have a look.
